Wow! so sorry to hear the news, unfortunately we have had an alarming high rate of drownings here in my town since the summer officially started just few days ago.

Same here. Few weeks ago that evil riptide snagged several swimmers. I think we lost 4 or 5 in less than a week. Farther south on Topsail Island a 13 year old girl picked up 70+ stitches from a shark bite.

Having lived along the Atlantic most of my life Ive learned to be wary of what the Ocean can do. You cant overpower a rip or undertow by going against them, you have to get out sideways then swim in. In a rip your not going to return where you went out, best to return where you can & walk back, swim diagonally toward shore with the rip at your back. When the waves form bumps & valleys in the sand the valleys are where the undertow is, you can see & hear the rush of concentrated backwash that can go pretty far out. It can hold you down while sending you deeper. Trying to plant your feet on the bottom & kicking to the surface is a good way out... You might be surprised how far you went. It also subsides as you go so not too hard to escape. Recognizing whats happening & not panicking is important, easy for experienced Ocean swimmers, surfers etc. In the last few years more than usual drownings happened here too. Stong rips have been cited but they've always been there, I think so many inexperience people go in not informed or prepared to have to be able to swim long distances to cover a short distance. Sad to hear of lives lost.
