  • Capsule Jackets Questions

Not at home where the rule books are. However, at some various races in 2009 (Not in USTS) I saw capsule drivers wearing only their racing suits (no capsule jackets) these drivers were in the larger divisions. Can I run without the capsule suits. The floatation isn't good upside down and the capsule would have to fail badly for the kevlar to help. I am making a custom seat and the suit makes a difference. Any help from OPC, Inboard, Offshore, Unlimited, Drag or anyone would be helpful.

    Sean,

It pretty much defaults to what your category rules state. I can't speak to OPC, but I do know that in inboard, the rules are that the ONLY drivers who are allowed to run with just a driving suit are those in boats with a Type IV capsule (thicker glass, reinforced roll bar and a hatch in the bottom). And those drivers must have flotation material in their driving suits if they elect to go with no capsule suit.

Out here, there is a new emphasis by the inboard inspectors to make sure that people are complying with this rule, as well as the capsule head clearance rules.

Long range, there was discussion at the National Meeting last year in the Safety Committee meeting about reviewing and revising the rule regarding flotation in capsule boats, since it seems that enforcement of the rule on a nationwide basis seems to be spotty at best. To date, I haven't seen any traction on any proposed changes.

    Hope that helps,
