Moved to new thread for Ray.

A beautiful day a great spectator crowd, and beautiful water greeted the USTS for our first race of the year. Being in Ocoee brought many a smile and an ahah to us northerners soaking up the sun and the hospitality of the Mayor and his group that helped with the logistics.

A good field of open boats kicked off our first day of racing on Saturday. However the gremlins were out in full force for the first day of racing for the Title Series in 2010, and for our day at Ocoee. This race is on a surveyed 3/4mile course for records and some were set.

Some were un-intended and unwanted by a number of drivers this weekend.
Between engine failures and jumping the gun it cost a number of drivers world records as well as loss of position in all of the classes. In a number of heats, we started with as many as 9 boats and saw only two running at the end. I told the crowd, by the looks of this, you can tell that this is the first race of the year for most of the drivers.

125H started with 9 boats and the first heat ended up with 2 boats running at the end of the first heat. Amy Nydahl and Kevin Ellison were the only two that finished. As the other two heats ran the gremlins were held at bay and had good numbers in the second and third heats. Kevin in the 3rd heat had is steering cable fail and snap rolled him on the backstretch and found him tangled in the boat, but was able to reach the surface of the water and was okay.

BJ Tetro had a terrible start to the day as he blew over in the first turn while testing, was pitched out of the boat in the first heat, but came back in the second heat to set a record of right at 64+mph for the second heat. Congrat to you BJ.

Tim Small started this weeked with great intentions, only to have a 500 motor blow up so bad and stop so quick that he almost went out of the boat, cracking the cowling in his F-5 and finding himself watching instead of running.

In 500R a spirited first heat with Jared Gryskiewicz and Mike Thirlby, racing side by side for 3 laps, resulted in a win and new record of over 71mph for Jared. Mike then took a heat and Jared and Mike were tied up on points. In the end Jared beat out Mike by less than 1/2 second for the win.

    In 350H
The gremlins were really out as Michael Schmidt, the younger, and Ken Godwin, driving a brand new Pugh for Chick LaRose collided in the bottom turn and virtually destroyed Michael's boat, with a little sponson damage and small hole in bottom the Pugh, put both of them on the beach for the rest of the day. Michael suffered a cut that took a few stitches between the thumb and the forefinger, but will be racing tomorrow.

Chris Hellesten had a world record go by the wayside as he jumped the gun and handed a win to Ike Yoder. Ben Thompson in a brand new MJR he built over the winter finished third.

Paulie Bosnich III drove a great race, taking 1st in the first heat as Tim Small had a problem right at the finish line and took 4th after leading. He drifted across the finish line just ahead of Brandon Thirlby who has his own set of problems. Paulie set a record in the first heat to take the 400 points which proved pivotal to his winning overall.

Paulie taking his points where he could get them, a first and two seconds to combine the finishes with enough points to take home his first 250title race in a boat painted up to a point we ordered it covered all weekend to ensure no one was blinded.

Tim Small , who celebrated a b-day yesterday, was not done just yet as he put a heat win in the second heat in the record book, by beating Paulies record set in the first heat by 4MPH. He upped the record for 250R to 65.49mph.

Congrats to Paulie and Tim for their wins.

    More tomorrow!

        Sunday's resluts from Ocoee

My thanks to the good Mayor Scott of the city of Ocoee, to him and all of his staff as we finished out day three of the 3/4 mile record course at Lake Starke. The hospitality was exceptional and the Title Series says a big thank you to all who participated from the City. The Ladies Club put on a great feed last night and fun was had by all. Thank you ladies!

The day started with threats of rain everywhere and we ended up being the everywhere, as the rain increased from drizzel to steady rain during the last half of the program. However we were able to run off all heats of racing with a great crew on the judges stand and Todd Brinkman directing traffic on the beach.

The water was absolutely perfect all day and records were broken and re-broken in all classes except K-Pro.

In 175H we started off with a bang, and I do mean a bang. Bill Hosler had old F-81, saying nothing of your age Bill, and Buddy Tennell collided in the first corner on the opening lap of heat number one. The whole left side of Bill's boat was gone and the prop marks on the remaining parts were quite evident, Buddy was unable to contnue as well. Fortunately neither Bill nor Buddy were injured and the racing was still at a fever pitch.

Diane Murray of Riverhead, Ny had N-6 just cooking, after almost destroying the boat at Depue at last years nationals. She came away with 2 heat wins and set a record in the first heat of about 65+ and came back and beat it in the second heat. She clearly had speed on all contestants. Ralph Donald had his 175 up toward the front, finishing second and Michael W. Schmidt, the younger, came back from his cut in 350H and took thirs

In 125R the Clock Gremlin took out four of the six boats that started in heat number two and gave a peek at what was to come the rest of the day, as good starts were at a premium.

Jay Anderson of Northlake, Illinois, broke the record in 125R in the third heat, taking the record from Dominic Defebo who won the first heat. Jay had jumped the gun in the two previous heats, but was right there at the start of heat 3. Dominic had his troubles with the clock as well and probably cost him a victory.

That victory belonged to the wiley veteran Buddy Tennell, who eventhough had been involved in the huge crash in 175H just previous to the first run, took home the gold. Andrew Thirlby enjoying his first ever 125R ride, imagine that, Mike Thirlby's son in a runabout!, finished on the podium as well.

        K-Pro
Wendy Elderedge had it her way as the jingle says. She was out front at the end of both heats of racing, although in the second heat Amy Nydahl just killed the start and had a pretty good lead going to the first turn, but Wendy using speed on the outside picked Amy off going down the backstretch and never looked back.

The fun fight was between Amy and her brother Kurt in this class. No one wants to lose to the other and they actually traded places one ahead of the other, the best part was Gradma Dori was there on her birthday to watch them both. Vincent Buskirk finished 3 in the first heat and fourth in the second.

Wow, was Chris Hellsten hooked up or what???? His European boat took a haircut this winter dropping 30 unwanted pounds out of it and it showed. Chris set a record in the first heat and then broke it in the second heat, nailing the starts both times.

At the start of the third heat, Chris' gears let go and he stopped on the front stretch. That allowed David Mitchell to take the overall heat win as David was able to take the third heat after two seconds in the first two heats. David never gave up as he tried to catch Chris in the first two, but was unable.

In the third heat, David and Rob Erbel hooked up and ran side by side for two laps scaring the judges stand more than once. David went through the bottom turn up on the outside of his right sponson on lap number 3 showing us about 1/2 of the bottom as he came through. He was able to drive through it, and went on to beat Rob to the start finish line. Rob had trouble in the first two heats and was not able to start either heat, and can only be left wondering what if? For David he will have no trouble finding out what way to put his shorts on tomorrow. For that matter, about half of us on the judges stand will either!!!!!

Melvin Cooper drove 3 consistant heats to finish on the podium as well.

Tim Small won the first two heats in convincing fashion as he beat JP Jedwabny of Appleton, Ws and set records in both heats. In the thrid heat a heck of battle ensued with Tim and JP "trading a little paint," as the ran side by side for 3 laps, with JP eeking out the win in the third heat. Understand that they called Mark and he is now the hydro driver, as JP had an outstanding weekend in the runabouts.

David Anderson of Morris, Illinois enlyed quite a weekend with two podium finishes in 500R and today in 350R. Congratulations to you David.

The Title Series drivers put on one heck of a show and we look forward to visiting some new places for Title Series races. We are in Wisconsin for the first time in quite awhile and Charlie Meyers from Hartford, Ct was in attendance, Charlie heads up the organization that is putting on a Title Series race this Labor Day weekend.

Again my thanks to the folks at Ocoee, we could not have asked for more from a city and its city leaders.
