  • Announcing The 2008 Zak Award Winner

2008 ZAK AWARD WINNER TIM SMALL TO BE CROWNED AT USTS BANQUET

Mike Krier and I, along with the contributors to the 2008 award, are happy to announce the 2008 winner of the ZAK Award is Tim Small for 350CC Runabout.
Tim won the award by putting the most points in that class on the board in USTS for the 2008 season. The award this year consists of the following prizes, cash awards, and large traveling trophy with the winners name from every year on it, plus a smaller permanent trophy that the winner keeps. The large traveling trophy was designed and built by Mike Krier and is one of a kind and a real work of art, just like the boats that bear his family's name. The award and prizes will be presented at the 2008 USTS banquet and awards ceremony in Chicago, November 8th, 2008.

    Contributors are as follows:

Thrilby Automotive 100.00 in racing sparkplugs
    Bill Tetro 150.00 cash award
Steve Litzell (VRP Engines) 100.00 in shear pins
Rex Hall (Rossi Engines) 100.00 toward crankshaft rebuild
Don Nichols 100.00 toward block reseleeving
Todd Brinkman (B&B Electric) 75.00 for USTS Membership
Craig Dewald (Dewald Props) 1/2 cost of new 3, 4, or 5, blade prop
Mike Krier (Krier Boats) 400.00 toward new boat or 200.00 boat repair plus designer and builder of the traveling trophy
Eileen and Bill Van Steenwyk 250.00 cash and permanent trophy

NOTE: ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTORS AT THE BANQUET ARE LISTED BELOW. THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
Gary and Sue Wyhoski 75.00 worth of Industrial Strength Duct Tape. This stuff will hold a boat together by itself!!
Payn Family Embroidered Shirt with "ZAK Award Winner" on it, plus "personal bathroom products. I will let them explain the "bathroom products".

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS!!!!!!

This brings the grand total of the award this year (depending on whether he needs boat repair or a new boat) to 1700.00 plus in addition to the trophies previously mentioned.

The award is presented each year since 1994 in the memory of Harry Pasturczak, to the high point winner of the USTS class with the lowest number of participants from the previous year, in this case 2007. That class was 350CC Runabout. The reasoning behind the award is to provide an incentative for drivers to join in racing in a class that may be down in driver count from previous years compared to others, so as to build that class back to previous levels of participation. This is the type reasoning that made Harry so valuable to USTS and the PRO category, by his giving to the sport by helping anyone, anytime, no matter whether whether they were a customer of his or not. He also gave freely of his time in many other ways in the beginning years of USTS, by pulling the equipment trailer at little or no cost for several years until USTS got established. He worked tirelessly as an official, not only USTS inspector, but also, with the help of his brother Stanley, inspecting at the PRO Nationals for many years until his death in the early 1990's.

The reasoning for the award seems to work, as whatever class the award has been for, has always grown in participation the year the award is presented. Tim is a two time winner this year, having won previously in 2004 for 250CC Runabout. Others who have won the award since its inception include the following:
    Peter Crowley
    Eddie Thrilby (three time winner)
    Mike Krier
    Jim Kirts
    Doug Hall
    Tim Brinkman
    Tom Brinkman
    Chris Hellsten (two time winner)
    Jeff Kugler
    Brian Payn

The only downside I can see to Tim winning this year is he has been a very generous contributor to the award for a number of years, and we don't get anything from him this year, except a really great performance in 350CC Runabout. I am sure he will be able to figure out something suitable to do for himself this year, Maybe a new boat??

Finally Mike and I would like to thank all the contributors since the inception of the award. Since 1994 almost 17,000.00 in cash and awards has been presented to the ZAK award winners.

THE AWARD FOR YEAR 2009 IS FOR 125 RUNABOUT. LET THE PREPARATIONS BEGIN.

          Way To Go Mooch!!!!!
Congrats on winning The Zak award. Looks like you'll have to buy a few more rounds at
the Tavy. Seeing you didn 't have to donate to your own award, maybe you could buy
a cooler for your trailer. You can't keep your first communion money for ever, but we know your trying!!!!!!!!!
Have a good time at the banquet and think of us as you hoist a few Friday night. The whole team will be up at Camp Bohica chasing whitetails. Marty even said he'd come up for a day.
Again, congratulations on the award and the great year you had..

            Congratulations Tim!

Great accomplishments this year, Tim. You surely earned the award through hard work and great driving. Zak originally built the modified 250cc Yamato reed-cage motor that I have run for over ten years (with the additional help of Mike Schmidt, and especially the final hardware refinement help of Lee Tietze.) Knowledgeable outboard motor machinists are like propeller makers - a treasure to those who cannot match their unique skills and setup wisdom. What an honor to be presented with a special award named in memory of a really great name in Pro racing and two-cycle motor building.

            Congratulations!
