Highway 43 bridge in Winona to open to car traffic June 14

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Highway 43 (Winona)/Wisconsin Highway 54 bridge over the Mississippi River will re-open to automobiles, pickups, vans, SUVs and emergency vehicles no later than 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said today.

Trucks, pedestrians and bicyclists are still restricted from crossing the bridge.
The bridge was closed June 3 because of rust and corrosion found in gusset plates at several locations of the bridge.

“We felt it was necessary to open the Highway 43 bridge to some level of service as soon as possible to reduce some of the inconvenience to Minnesota and Wisconsin commuters,” said Tom Sorel, transportation commissioner. “Mn/DOT is confident that the bridge is safe to open to car traffic until repairs can be made to the gusset plates.”
Repair work will begin by mid summer with anticipated completion by late summer/early fall.

Bridge repair work will be done in this order:

    1. Thirty-two gusset plates have been identified as needing repair work. Mn/DOT will repair the most critical gusset plates first in order to allow truck traffic back onto the bridge as soon as possible.

    2. Sidewalks will be replaced along with cleaning and painting of bridge joints. After all repair work is completed, the bridge is expected to be opened to all traffic including pedestrians and bicyclists.

On June 19 and 20, a single-lane closure will be necessary to complete the final repair analysis of the bridge. Motorists may encounter brief closures of the bridge until repair work begins to allow fire trucks to cross. Otherwise, the bridge will remain open to automobiles, pickups, vans, SUVs and emergency vehicles until repair work begins.

During bridge repair work, traffic will be reduced to one lane during working hours and east and westbound traffic will be alternated with the use of flaggers. Occasional full bridge closures may be needed during repair work to allow movement of equipment on and off the bridge.

Through June 20, a 20 passenger ferry will be available for pedestrians and bicyclists needing to cross the river. Mn/DOT and the city of Winona are looking into transit options to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists after that time.

The designated truck detour for the Highway 43 bridge is Highway 43 to Minnesota Highway 14/Highway 61 to Interstate 90 over the Mississippi River Bridge near Dresbach, to Wisconsin Highway 53, back to Wisconsin Highway 54. Detour length is 65 miles.

“I want to again say how much we appreciate the patience and understanding of commuters and travelers who have been inconvenienced by the closure of the Highway 43 bridge,” Sorel said.

the closure of the MN 43 bridge will not affect any travel by USTS members
The directions of the sanction do indicate travel on a portion of MN43 but not across the river to Wisconsin. Even the Wisconsin participants will arrive on I90, not across the MN43 bridge.

Just a note for anyone who may be taking the Isle of the Saints from St Louis North towards St.Paul/Minneapolis and will be going through Iowa....
Many of our roads here in Iowa are closed due to flooding. Hopefully by this week some bridges will be open. Interstate 80 is closed in a couple of places and I 380 North between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids remains closed.
If you have to come through Iowa please check the Iowa DOT website or email me and I will see what is open.
PS. looks like we may have lost a 250 engine. We should know by the end of the week when we can get into the shop.

The flooding in southern MN does not affect the lake in Winona. The lake is in perfect condition. I have to make some adjustments as far as parking rigs is concerned, but these changes will not affect the race course nor the great time we will have at Steamboat Days
Just be sure to consult with me before you drop your rig

          Drving from Minneapolis

          Pete,

Are you aware of any construction or detours coming down from Minneapolis? Is 61 (parallel to the river) the best route?

per sanction instructions: follow west bound I90 through Wisconsin to LaCrosse and into Minn, then exit on northbound US 61. You will not find any problems in Minn. I have heard news reports of I90/I94 with some closures in Wisconsin somewhere around Madison. Stahl or Nydahl might speak more accurately to these issues

I misread your earlier quest for directions
From Minneapolis (presumably from the airport) take MN5 east toward St Paul to MN55 east across the Mendota bridge to US52 south toward Rochester and follow 52 all the way to I90 eastbound toward LaCrosse. Then get off I90 at MN43 north to Winona. I followed this route yesterday for about a 2 hour ride with no delays

                  Connie,

I saw the pics of Cedar Rapids under water, that is some serious flooding. I even saw Terry's mug in a pic on CNN I believe. Sure looks like him in the crowd waiting to find out when y'all can return to your homes to asess the damage. Hope it all works out for you.

Joe & Lauren's BIG adventure to Winonna

So far it has been "interesting"...Monday morning just as they were leaving the Flying J in Elko, NV after gassing us, they broke an axel on the trailer. Rich called around and found someone who would fix it, but once Joe got the trailer there, they were nervous about it due to liability. Luckily, one of the guys back in the machine shop spotted the boats and ask Joe if he know Mike Lopez who he use to work for (former racer out of CA) and was willing to weld it up. 5 1/2 later and they were back on the road.

Everything was going smoothly, still planning on hitting Mount Rushmore on Wednesday morning, until Tues. afternoon in South Dakota when then had to turn tail and haul butt away from a tornado on the horizon. Cost them a bit of time and Joe some seriously gray hair and intestinal discomfort!

So, they are skipping Mt. Rushmore and staying in Rapid City tonight then back on the road in the morning heading for Winona...probably be there Wednesday nigh or Thursday morning.
