What kind o f reeds are you using in Mod D engines. Have tryed several different types and not having much luck making it through a season. Like to hear if their are any tricks to making them last longer. Does Phil Mcdaniel still have them. His seemed to last the longest. Lost his phone #,anybody have it.

From my experience if you want reeds to last a whole racing season in a D Mod Merc you have to stay with steel.

What I have used in the past with the most success is .025 fiberglass. The life is less than an hour before the tips start to fray. Other materials were either stiffer than the steel reeds or had even shorter life

What I will use in the future is a secret

I don't know why you are all having issues with fiber reeds. I have used them in my d merc two rebuilds now. The first lasted 5 seasons and this rebuild is 2 seasons old and motor was running very strong when put in storage for the winter. I love them as I had a motor pretty much self destruct when I lost a metal reed. I run 1 qt of valvoline tcw 3 oil to 4.75 gals of aviation gasoline. Never have had a problem with inspection and motor performs pretty well for having to push around a fat driver and an old desilva runabout, but having lots of fun

Are you using the Mercury plastic reeds?

Snowmobile from almost any manif. will work. I got some from a 600 cc and there is enough to easily make a complete set for the Merc. Also almost any motorcross bike reeds work real well. They were made for high RPM race engines. ....Bob N-96

                  More Oil

Here's a tip: The more oil you use, the longer the reeds will last. Twenty to one is OK, but ten to one is better.

The Mercury 44XS plastic reeds (~0.021") are available from Boyesen under part number 16684. (That is the original Mercury part number.)

                      Don't overrev

If the reeds are getting fuzzy tips it's because the tips are hitting the crank. Make sure your reed-stop heights are correct and don't overrev the motor. It happens when you go nuts on the gas trying to get on plane. I try to ease the boat up as much as possible and have had the (plastic) reeds in my 44s last literally for years. Actually about 10 years in one case. I also run 8 to 1 ratio on my oil mix.

Alan and I are going to use the 650/65 hp reed stops for that very reason!....they supposidly cover the length of the reed?....will know for sure as soon as we find time to dismantle the donor motors we found....

Oh well. I don't race mod anymore anyway. I learned that it's pointless with a probationary mota. ( get it, pointless... )

BTW, I can change reeds in about 30 minutes start to finish with my Tohatsu!

That does not explain why the exact same reed tip fraying occurs on motors where the tips are not in the same area as the crank.
