  • Need help with Y80 magneto point cam removal

While adjusting the points on this engine I noticed a minute crack in the point cam rubbing surface. It starts from the top where the key way is located (an obvious stress point) and proceeds in a diagonal way to the bottom of the rubbing surface. Strange but non the less it needs to be replaced.

Question: Have you experienced this cracking of the cam?

Question: Can the cam be removed without the special cam puller tool noted in the manual (tool # 15-9110 fairly expensive)? If tool can be eliminated what did you do to remove the cam?

Question: I assume that the new cam can be pressed back using the starter pully nut and some flat washers and a socket. If yes what did you do to install it?

    Thanks for the response

That failure is very, very common. It is realy not pressed on, just slipped on. It may be a bit rusty and should come loose very easily. I simply pry it up a bit and then slide it off. Possible a shot of WD-40 will help but don't spray to much on other parts. Tom will give you some tips. Jack
