  • J Hydro Set Up Rule of Thumb?

Is there a rule of thumb for setting up a J Hydro as far as transom height?

Specifically, if I'm running an OMC in AXSH at the maximum height and 20+ lbs over the minimum weight in AXSH but the boat gets on plane fine, will this same height work after the change to a J restrictor and J prop and still 20 lbs over J minimum weight? Or is there a rule of thumb as to how far to drop the engine for this setup?

    J Hydro Setup

We always ran at max height and adjusted the kick under to fine tune.

J props are the real variable. We have found over 2 mph difference between the best and worst. If its hard to get on a plane its probably fast. I'm glad were done with J because its frustrating at times and i'm not the picture of patience most of the time. I hope this helps.

Try using the 1/2 hole (J plate) and a J prop, just as said, then play with the kick in. If the boat does not plane, you might have a to designate a "park your but to plane here" X on the side of the cockpit. Once the boat drops the first time it usually scares the crap out of the driver but once it happens, they get it. We had until earlier today, the worst planing boat in exisitence. It took several failures until KT got it down pat....
Since we changed boats, and the others seem to not have the same problems, I would anticipate this problem to go away, but will know better in a week after we are all rigged and ready.

Get a J test prop from Dewald, but as said, lots of variables, but at least you can test J with that prop.

Thats about all my 10 months of inexperience can tell you, good luck!

On our J stuff, we have run close to the height limit, BUT kick it out some. The J's don't have the HP to carry the nose, so a little kick out helps keep the sponsons off the water.

If your boat has an inset transom it will be hard to plane, you'll probably have to go to a more conservative set-up.

        Add; Hydro info only.
