  • Need a Lumber Source

I'm getting ready to build my first boat and am trying to find source for Sitka Spruce and Okoume plywood in the middle Georgia Area. If anyone can help I would be very greatful. The other thing I was wondering is there a good substitute for Stika Spruce that would be more readily available?

    Lumber source

Try Sorenson in Chowchilla CA for okoume ply and sitka spruce. If you google okoume and sitka as seperate searches you will find a large number of suppliers.

While the sitka is the best to use for its strength and straight grain and min knots it does have a high cost. I have constructed several hydros and other boats and found good clean No 1 spruce boards at the local lumber yard more than adaquate although it takes a bit of patience to pull select boards. With proper sized members, good joinery construction and epoxy glue the hull will be plenty strong enough.

Years ago when I was building boats my local lumberyard would call me when they received a shipment of #2 Spruce. I would pick through it as there was some nice clear pieces . . . cheap.

Those days are gone forever as my local lumberyard is now a Home Depot.

From the mid west east most have gone to Obechee for framing and stringers just as strong as Spruce and no knots and much easier to work with also its lighter. I also use clear white pine and balsa in non stress areas under the decks. John Runne has a source for Obechee in N.C. that is reasonable. Harbor Sales is the source for the Okoume Plywood , Foam, and Polycarbonate windshield material in Md.
