In the Yamato PRO hatchet units I use pins that I buy from Steve77t (a member here on HydroRacer).
In the Merc units I use/used the pins that are for the old OMC 18/20/25 hp fishing motors. Just go to any OMC dealer and ask for some shear pins for an early '70's 20 horse. (I think they are #10.)...
OMC FE/SE powerhead parts for sale. Kurcz ported block, Mod 50 pistons and cylinder head, exhaust, etc.

Shear pins
I have used aircraft grade clevis pins with good results; they are a much higher grade of steel than the hardware store variety of clevis pin. I buy them online from: www.wicksaircraft.com.

Grade 5........
My prop maker gives me crap everytime he sees this, but we use grade 5 bolts with locknuts for the SEH in the Hatchet foot. We drill out the shaft accept. Since we have done that I have yet to blow a pin under the 3 holer.... although gears are a different thread all together.
Under any other engine we us just about anything mentioned above. Original Merc pins that Larry Gotchaw sells work well to.Dave Mason

I know what doesn't work . . .
My friend was the grand experimentor for shear pins. He was a machinist and decided those *slightly* tapered 3/16" pins used to locate a part on the milling deck would make great shear pins. "Hard steel," sez he. Yep. Brittle as well. My son's KG-4 snapped one, and the Hot Rod 15s wouldn't even get on plane before snapping those brittle hard pins.
Next up - 3/16" stainless steel rod cut to shear pin length. Meanwhile I was cutting regular old hobby store steel rod which worked well. But we just had to try the SS pins. Pin bent, and methinks it took us more'n hour to beat that dang bent pin out with a drift and BIG FREAKING HAMMER.
Anyhoo, hobby store "music" wire (springy steel) works for the small displacements we ran, buy the aircraft clevis pins mentioned before are the hot setup. You could even safety wire the bugger on and avoid all those annoying (&^$*&%#^&*^) spit pin experiances.carpetbagger
