The first mini most engine was tested yesterday. Carl Staron, Tom Dunn and John Schutzenhoffer used a Briggs and Stratton 5 hp on a jon boat for testing purposes. They were amazed at how fast the 5 got the jon boat on plane. Carl says that this little thing is going to be a big blast for boat racing. He should have the boat done for rides at the next Lake Placid Race!

I agree with Dean...This is Cool. While I don't expect these to be fast, I like the idea of the Briggs motor and the Mini Most hull. Besides, fast isn't the main thing. Same engine and same boat, then it's a race - fast or not so fast.
The motor is availabe and it's really pretty inexpensive. The tubular frame on outboard also lends itself to attaching a steering bar and throttle cable bracket easily. Plus, it's probably easy for kids to pull the rope themselves.
The minimost is also a tried and true hull. A "one design" concept should be interesting.
The other aspect I really like is the fact that it should get up on plane quickly...as evidenced by the Jon boat test. Having graduated through the "J dad" thing, the most frustrating thing for the parents and especially for the kid was to attempt to get on plane.
And most importantly, it will be fun! Too bad I'm too old. I wanna play too.

Maybe I'll get one and hang it on my ASR! I'm still too old for J though, but it would still be fun.
The Briggs website says it does 4000 RPM. It has a 7.8" prop and a gear ratio of 1.57:1. At zero slip, that's about 18.8 MPH. With the prop at 90% efficient, that's 17 MPH. But for a new, young racer that would still be a thrill.
The outboard only weighs 56 lbs. It's a 11.5 ci engine (189cc) 4 stroke.

That looks like fun for the little kids, but I wish you would bring back the old "36" Runabout class for us old, over 65 kids with diminished reflexes but young hearts. I`d love to do it again, but with old farts my own age.

No problem, Get your friends and bring your equipment to an AOF race. We have a division called "Historical" in which anything goes from the past. Rules are not printed because the format is "rules of the day." Actually, concerning the mini most: The old farts in Lake Placid are having a ball. They are acting like young kids with this project, and I would just bet you will find them in one of the rigs. Maybe we can have age brackets?
