  • New racer needs help with 25SS

    Hello,

I am new to this site and a friend and I each recently purchased hydroplanes and 25SS motors. We are both very experienced driving larger boats very fast (we have 3 hydrostreams between us), but we have little to no experience with these smaller rigs. At this point we plan to just use these for fun. We are both approx 225 pounds and realize we wouldnt be competitive as racers. My boat is an older Hedlund I am told. It is 10' 3" and has a stock Merc 25ss. I also have a real nice older 10'3" runabout. My friends boat is a 25ssh which was purchased today from this site. His motor is a 25SS mod. We have several questions for which any answers and advise would be greatly appreciated:

What would be an all around good prop to use for top end? I have about 5 nice 2 bladeprops for a KG7H type motor and one nice 3 blade marked 25SSR.
I was told a cleaver type would be good.

What would be a the proper height to run the motor?

My motor has electronic ignition. My friends has a Phelon? ignition. What is the difference? Which is better?

Where can we get parts for these? We need fuel pump gaskets, hoses etc. since the motors have been sitting around for a while.

Where can I get a Kill switch?

What kind of water pressure should it have? How hard should the water spray out of the bleed off fitting on top?

What kind of speed should we expect?

    Many other misc. advise

    Thanks for your time

I'm surprised no one answered here... give them a little more time to find the thread.

I'm just guessing with this info, I've never raced one, been years since I even seen a stock one.

Speed might be in the low 60's for the stocker? Height, maybe even to down a 1/4" based on other classes of it's day? Kill switch can be ordered at most any motorcycle/sled shop, or go to www.fralickboats.com

Search some of Steve French's posts on here... I think he is quite knowledgeable about the motors and has some mod ones I think.

If nothing else it will bump your thread and maybe someone with the knowledge will come in pointing out how wrong i am...

What should the timing be set at?

Please help I would like to set this up ASAP and test drive it!!!

          Shop manual

          Hi

          Have you tried e-bay?

I used to run 20H's and I used .015 points gap and .190 BTDC on the timming. Spark plugs will be different but check with Champion, NGK or a Merc dealer.
          Electronic ignition is usually better.

Hope you get out on the water and have some fun, Have you thought about Racing?
