  • Bass/Tohatsu M50D2: inside-out.

Here are some pics of the internal workings of my new motor. I didn't have the camera with me during the early stages of the teardown. So you'll have to wait 'till I put it back together to see the assembled powerhead.
I really like the design of the reeds, and the flow across the rod journals. The intake passages look very efficient. The pistons are light. I'll have to dig up a piston from an old 44 Merc to compare.
More pictures are on their way. I'm out of time today.

YES! It will be great to see the two motors compete. It should be close racing!

Maybe. I'm sceptical that they will match up on the race course.

No. The Tohatsu will need to be restricted. (slowed down)

Survival of the fittest. There should be no restrictions. Let the fastest motor win.

    A couple more...

Here's a picture of the crankcase plate (front and back) with the reeds in place. I wanted to show the direct flow from the carbs into the motor. Also I've got a picture showing the intake bypass passages.

      Lower unit installation.

Here are some pictures of the Bass lower unit installation.
I had never even seen any of this equipment before I bought it. So, maybe I can take the mystery out of it for others.
Pic 1 shows the water inlet at the bottom of the lower unit.
Pic 2 shows the brass shim and water pump impeller in place.
Pic 3 is the bottom of the towerhousing with the essentric milled out for the water pump impeller.
Pic 4 shows the lower unit and impeller slid into place.
Pic 5 is the finished installation.
By the way... The water pump impeller is a standard Sierra part number. I think it was an 18-3007.

Are you going to take your rig to Pineville? You might do a roll call for DSH. Make sure you have a good number of boats. I know of a few DSH that are not going from our area. We definitly would like all to see the Tahatsu. Approving this motor was not as easy as some think. The parity commitee will collect data so to keep all the DSH competitve with each other. Good luck if you go Jeff. Mike
