When I built that sail boat for Alan Alder, he thought he had came up with the idea of the vented step in the hull. Shortly after that I was watching a video on a Gar Wood boat from the 20's, guess what, his step hydro had vents in the step.

DS; -my most enjoyable times racing, over the past 20 yrs, was against a totally beautiful DSH you built for Larry Downs, 50N, c2000. We run a Giles, he built for me in 2005, and some of our battles were memorable , ie; Crystal Lake , NY . Hope to see it out again this summer . (bh/)

The Marcells built an ASH with NACA inlets in the front deck, feeding a duct that exited at the back of each sponson. It was hard to tell if it helped , all their stuff ran well.

I heard the inboard sponsons called " wet " in the 60's. They weren't really vented, the inlet and outlet were the same hole.

Their 2 throttle system to get on plane was pretty slick. The old man was intense (the East Coast guys know better then most) but he built some nice boats.

-off topic , but its my thread , some pics of that Sorenson DSH. Beautiful decks ! It went from a kneeler, to a lay down, and back .
No vents that I knew of ? (bh/)

-yes, Larry did not like lay-down, maybe too tall?, so he got Rob Cotton to drive.
Robby was such a mlld guy in the pits, but a monster when the flag dropped.

JM; -deep in the bowels of my old HP with a MS2000 OS comes this pic .
I wonder if he was addressing 'blow-overs', or aero drag ?
