Megaphone design

I seem to remember that the megaphone style exhaust had a square cut exhaust opening and then sometime also later an angle cut. Was this an improvement? Did it broaden the power range? I know this dates me back to the stone age, but I noticed the OMC15A inner exhaust has an angle at the outlet.
