What type tach are you asking about? Inductive or battery?

As ZUL8TR states, depends on type of tach. TTs, MyChrons, etc. have a lead that wraps around a sparkplug lead - although some folks also wire into the killswitch...

You will find limited success with most of the common name tach's(tiny, digatron, etc) this is due to the primary & secondary coil setup on the 80.Over 20 years of running these motors I found the most consistant readings I got was with a STIHL chainsaw tach I got from Scott Reed about 15 years ago .Unfortunately they do not make that model any more.I never tried the michron 4 because after buying digatron and sending it back to them several times with no success then the Tiny tach that worked 1out of 10 runs I wasn't going to fork out 400 bucks on a hope &a prayer that it might work. The STIHL used an induction wire you wrap 4 times around the bottom plug wire then take the top wire and pull it up and tie wrap it to the gas tank bracket to separate the wires so you don't pick up from both wires.I also insulated the induction wire with a small dia. fuel line from the spark plug wire up to the dash of the boat and that helped with any interference from metal steering bars or the motor .Once I did that the Tach worked 100%.,Hope this helps
