  • Merc j/axs spark plugs? And more questions...

What is the recommended or what you are using for spark plugs? New to this motor I need help.

Do you need the high energy ignition?
Feel free to pm if you don't want to give away to much. Lol

NGK spark plug BPZ8HS15, I have seen some recent national winning J mercs run with the standard coils, but its not gonna run any slower with the big coils

Wow longest plug number I have ever seen

You can also use the BP8HS15...which is the non-resistor version. The high energy kit comes with quiksilver plugs but in taching them found no material difference. Autolite has a compatible version as well...have them in the box but not tested yet.

So the 15 at the end is a .060 gap. I am also wondering if the plugs in Ash's motor were the wrong plug with some small gaps. I will have to check...

Yup, .060 gap. Good question about the smaller gap - they could be firing prematurely firing with the smaller gap so it would create a smaller/weaker spark as well as retarding the timing just a tiny bit which could explain the throttle response issue. I'm curious about what you find - keep us posted...

So I had some champion L78yc6 with a gap about .055 and rich plugs. I will go with some new plugs. I don't think it was spark.

There is no difference in the standard coils and the high-output ones. What is different is the holder and field pieces. We were the first to try them and couldn't tell a performance difference so I suggested they be approved since they were a standard Merc accessory. With a limited budget, buy some carburetor jets before the ignition kit.

I need some correct Mercury part numbers. If you have them...

      Jets
      .068 and .070

Whole carb assembly so I can add a baffle and full butterfly and go.

We are needing these parts before Constantine. So I need to order soon.
