With all the unique Mod set ups , has anyone put a OMC 3 hole 70-75 hp powerhead on a D merc 44 xs style tower ? Comparing gaskets it looks like it would be possible .

It could be done with and adapter plate. I don't think the Merc. tower is strong enough to last. Many years ago I had a 55H tower break into with a 44 Merc. I am not sure if the 44XS tower is stronger or not. I have a steel tube one and a steel box type both have worked good. good luck with this project. I should be at ( Tabor city CMH 44Z) I will bring them for you to look at.

Thanks - I have been thinking of building a Merc 50 hp lower with a Stinger OMC powerhead - I have a Trim / tilt stock tower 20 inch that fits on Jacks tunnel hull- If I built a plate I could run the OMC power head with a 50 hp Merc gearcase ( sized like a Nitro OMC) have Tilt and Trim and not have to change out the Jack plate for a 15 inch stinger center section.

I highly reccomend you go with a steel housing. With the good virations an good OMC 3-Holer gives off, you stand a good chance at shearing studs. Fought this for a few years using gaskets, silicone, you name it. Finally went back to steel housings and never had an issue.Dave Mason
