  • c-mod question

Is it feasible/cost-effective to convert a mark 30 (fishing motor) to a competitive c-mod. We have a Bezoat c-mod and a mark 30 thats in good condition.Or, should we purchase a new yamato 302 and transform it into a mod? Any advice-input would be appreciated. Thanks Chip Solms

Both are possible. The Yamato is definitly less work.

      cost

sams right a yamy is less work because its a stock powerhead and more then not a yamy will beat a merc 30, but!! I love 4 cyl mercs and I'm putting two together later this year. They can beat a yammy when you get a fast one its just harder to get one to realy run good but I can put together 2 mercs for the price of a yamy.I'm a racer thats likes to have fun and still try to win and likes to tinker so the mercs are fun for me but if you really want to win and money is not a factor go yamy but if your here for fun and like the the cool factor mercs rule! my 2 cents mike.

I've never built a Yamato C mod so I don't know how much it cost to build one. Parts for the Yamatos have to be more available than 30H parts though. You'll have to run a chamber on the Yamato. I don't know how much experimenting the Yamato racers do with pipes. Could be they just buy one and that's all they ever do in the way of pipes???

I don't know what is legal in the way of lower units for Yamatos....

For Yamato C mod tower and pipes I'd just ask here who builds / where to buy. Look on front page of HydroRacer for Machined Components ad for one source.

A good Mercury can still be competitive, but it is going to be expensive to build if you don't already have a stash of parts. You can't just throw a set of stacks on a fishing motor and expect to finish anywhere near the front. I wouldn't even consider building a C mod Merc unless I could put it together with a new bore, new rings and preferably a new set of pistons. New pistons and rings aren't easy to come by. I guess lower unit choice will depend somewhat upon which organization you are going to race with. In AOF anything goes except overdrive. In NBRA 16:21; 1:1, and one tooth reduction (i.e. 14:15) are legal. 14:19 may also be legal, but I'd have to dig out my rule book and look that up to be sure. Any make lower unit is allowed in AOF and NBRA. I don't know what all is allowed in APBA??? If you plan on running a Merc unit I hope you already have one as they aren't just real easy to find and aren't cheap if you do find one for sale. In fact, none of the parts needed to build a Merc are what most people would call "cheap" with the exception of maybe a used powerhead (that will need some expensive machine work).

Steve Roskowski builds a tower for the Mercs. I think Dudley Malone is still building the Bayer exhaust systems. The Parker exhaust systems are still being built by Tim Kurtz.

I hope I haven't scared you off from racing C mod - and a Mercury C mod in particular - but I'm being honest with you about the Merc. If you want any more info just shoot me an e-mail.
        ...

          Mark 30 Available

I know someone around my neck of the woods that has a Mark 30 and is willing to sell it. I think it is a powerhead, stock, might be the whole fishing engine. If interested shoot me an email I will put you in touch with him.

The motor that Dave is talking about is my motor and is a complete motor. It is a stock Mk 30E. I'm asking $100.00 OBO. E-mail either Dave M or myself if you are interested.

Thanks to everyone for the input on my c-mod question. Does any one know how I can contact Steve Roskowski? I have some questions regarding the ignition for the c-merc that he working on.
