  • D Mod point gap

I would appreciate it if someone could help me on the point gap for a D Mod Merc 44. I have the mag apart cleaning it up and just got the motor last year and have never checked the point gap and would like to do so now. Thank you for your help.

    Point Gap.

    Hey there,

What kind of wear is on your mag shaft, that is the first thing to check. I set them .008 - .010 and set the cam wick so it just lightly touches the magshaft. But then I dwell to 48 degrees with a merc mag and 54 degrees with a fairbanks.
I do not stop until the point are breaking exactly at 48. and not before or after. This is sometime a long process and if you have a lot of wear on the magshaft you may only be able to set your initial gap and hope for no flutter at top end.

Once that is all done you should set the oz. lbs torque on the points spring to 32 OZ. lbs. if you cannot get 32 then junk the points and get new NOS Mercury points.

The other major is filing the points to get a perfect 90 degree face.

    Regards
