  • 102-202-302 in b-mod

Would a 102-202-302 with a pipe & lower unit mods but with a carb restrictor be competitive in B Mod or would it be to fast against the other legal engines? Would like to hear from APBA & NBRA drivers. Might be something that NBRA would consider if feasable in the future.

in 20ssh they run the 80 , 102,202,302.the 302 with a restricter is faster off the corner than the 80 unrestricted from what I have seen.

Art,,,,,,,,, your best bet,, in my opinion, would be to talk to Rick Miller.
I believe they run a Y-80 with a pipe and special tower and L/U.
It has been proven to be a little faster than the 20 c.i. Hot Rod.

I disagree, we should not be looking into running a restricted 102 and/or 302 in 3500MH. There are more and more stock model 80's for sale because the 302 restricted has taken over as the dominant motor in stock. There is and will be plenty of available engines to purchase if someone want to enter the class. Remember, cubic inches will always prevail.

A few years ago at the Whitney Point Nationals, we won both B and C Mod hydro. John Palmquist drove the boat in B and Brian drove the same boat in C. Both were on class weight so that worked out ideally. More behind the scenes, both set-ups used the same propeller and ran the same speed.

Now that was an exceptionally good B motor with a lengthy record of nationals and records before John got it but does show what an 80 mod can do. There are a couple others out there now of similar caliber, ie Miller and Koshka and maybe others.

The classes are closer than most realize and especially with the common availability of 80 motors, it would be difficult to equalize performances with different motors.

Why create problems when motor availability is not a real issue? Post here that you want to buy an 80 to convert to mod and see how many replies you generate?

            Restricted ?

            Art,

This is my opinion. I am not in favor of restrictor plate classes. If a class can't survive on its own with the intended engine, time to move on. I understand it is necessary in some cases, such as novice, but I don't feel this is one of them.

What might be a better option is allowing the Y80 or B Mod Class to be absorbed into the C Mod class, and phase out the B Mod class if it can't sustain itself. This way the people that run the Y80 in B Mod have a place to race it, without having a low boat count class. As Team B&H pointed out, the two run the same props at pretty much the same speed.

Spectators and Sponsors alike can identify a "Yamato" as the announcer calls it. What they don't get, nor do they care, is the fact that they are different class engines that look pretty much identical. So in my mind it is logical to allow it into the C Mod class as it is a Yamato class, given speeds are within a mile an hour or two of each other.

Why are they unloading hot 20ss motors?

Dana holt many times 20h champion has sold his 20's. He bought a 302 and then up the 20 record. A restricted 302 will be faster and the 20 guys will go away. The B class has several motors that can be used and it gives those gals and guys a place to race. After a lot of testing the y80 is the strongest motor on a mile course. 1/2 mile course the omc can stay with the 80 and the 25 mod mercury has a chance too. If we keep the mod 80 as the motor of choice, we have a cheap and dependable motor. A C mod has too much punch for the y80.
