  • Real Life J Hydro Picklefork Example

Let's pretend some of us don't fully comprehend the upcoming J Hydro picklefork rule. And let's pretend that some of us still have a J Hydro that needs to be modified to meet the new rule. Based on the photos below, what needs to be done? Let me know if I need to provide any additional measurements.

All APBA SO,MOD,PRO hydro classes and USTS hydro classes
are viewed from the TOP & BOTTOM of sponson tips rules....

J Category Rule Book Sponson Diagram

Ok, I went to www.apba.org > Resources > Rule Books > Junior Classes

which you can also get to by this URL:

          http://www.apba.org/resources/junior...ules-2014-2104

and downloaded the file named 2014-J.pdf.

I opened the PDF file and scrolled down to SAFETY RULE 2 • EQUIPMENT > 17. Junior Classes Hydroplane Pickleforks and Cockpit Noses (ALL HGYDROPLANES MUST COMPLY)

Below is the diagram that appears.

My first question is, what is a "HGYDROPLANE"???

            pickle pucks

I used a 1 1/2 hole saw to cut 2 round pucks out of 3/4 cedar stock , then I cut a 180 degree section out of each puck , dispose of the off cut 178 degree piece,. now notch each one of your 2 sections to fit around the pointy pickel you have, glue them on with a little epoxy and a couple coats of varnish . no cuting up a great boat and meets the rule.

Thank you. That was a helpful reply. I knew one option was to add material, rather than cut away the existing picklefork, but I couldn't think of a practical way to do it that would meet the rule.

                  Help me with the math

I really like the idea of gluing on a 3/4 inch thick plug to meet the picklefork rule rather than cutting off the tips but I'm still struggling with this. If the minimum radius as shown in the diagram is 1 inch, and diameter equals radius x 2, wouldn't I need a 2 inch hole saw? Even so, a 2 inch hole saw produces a 2 inch diameter hole, not a 2 inch diameter plug (circle). So wouldn't I actually need to use hole saw slightly larger than 2 inches which produces a plug (circle) absolutely no less than two inches in diameter? Is my thinking right or wrong?

DO NOT CUT, CHOP or FILE pickle tips. Instead, trace radius with a felt-tip pen (sharpie) and sand the contour. I use a custom 2x4 fitted to 3m adhesive auto body sand paper strips. I begin with 36 grit to mold the contour. The next step is to check the dimensions. If all dimensions are met, finish sand to your preference, I like 80 to about 150 grit. If a void appears, fill with "peanut butter" consistency epoxy with filler or your preferred wood filler, then seal and finish.

FYI, the minimum radius of 1" is merely a contour line and according to the APBA drawings, is only applied to the frontal area of the sponson measured 1" from any interior point of the contour. Use a radius gauge to check for compliance.

Remember, you can shape the area to a contour GREATER than a 1" radius

                        2 1/2 hole saw

Mark you are correct- old mind is starting to forget . On a hull design like yours you have to add the material to come into compliance. You cant sand away material that is not there.

I forgive you. Didn't the rule change from a 3/4 inch radius to a 1 inch radius? If so, the 3/4 inch radius is where you got the 1 1/2 inch hole saw size.

                              I Don'T Know The Rule

I do know that Ernie Dawe just made these pickle forks legal, he said he had to add 1/4 to make them thick enough. A little paint and this boat will be good to go!
