  • How to remove the prop shaft seal on a Yamato?

    Hey,

Anyone know how to easily remove the seal on the prop shaft on a Yamato 102? The dang lil' bugger will not come out!

Only if I had an M-80?

    Thanks
    Bill

      Fishinworm,

How do I get it past the cone? The shaft assembly is still all together but, ... it is out of the gear case.

remove the rear plastic spanner nut first...........then you can pull the seals out with any homemade screw/pick setup................a cheap easy way is to screw a small screw into the seal and pull the seal out, putting new seals in with the cone still on the lower unit is a little trickier, unless you have a long sleeve the fits the diameter of the seal and long enough to allow the prop shaft to pass through to press the new seals back in.....

much easier to do with the cone assy removed though, but no totally necessary.....

            Daren,

I tried to put a screw in it as I was told by RM. It has metal under the rubber. I tried drilling a 1/16 hole into it, but the bit doesn't want to drill it as I think it's hardened steel. It either wants to wander into the shaft of the threads of the cone. I have now removed the soft rubber that makes contact with the shaft and have tried to use a pick with out much success.

Installing it will be the easiest part. I will turn a plastic rod the diameter of the bearing with a 9/16 hole bored into it so the shaft fits into it, then I'll just bump it into place.

                  Alan,

Sorry for being late with the photos.

I was using a pick but it was just being straightened out and the bearing was stuck in pretty good. I took some 1/8" music wire available at any hobby shop and heated it cherry red and bent a tight hook and quenched it in water to harden it.

You can see in the photo of the bearing, I tried drilling with not much success. I finally used an xacto knife and cut the soft rubber next to the prop shaft and inserted the hook and gave it a quick sharp pull with a pair of vise grips. It came out easier than I thought it would.

                    302 tailcone seal removal

With a seal on the driveshaft ( 35X15X7) and a plate on top to hold it down.
remove tailcone circlip and seal protecter, vent screw and oil,Use rubber tipped blow gun & about 50psi,blows seal right out . you can reuse seal again as it is not damaged.I've done 5or6 shaft replacements,,,

                      Thanks Bill,

Is there a cone tool that can be bought for removing the assembly? This is my first venture into the Yamato. My grand daughter will start racing novice this summer so were look to have some fun.

you can use the Merc cone tool, you just have to make different pins (square on cone nut end)...........thats what i did..........

                            Alan,

I made the one in the picture from 3/8 aluminum I had laying around.
