  • Composit cockpit sides

Any one sell the CF/Kev sandwiched foam board for cockpit sides? I have seen boats that the sides were sawed off, except for a few inches, then the board epoxied to the outside of the lip, making the cockpit a bit larger (I could use that).

How much of the existing cockpit should be left aft to support the transom?

Thanks Mike. I may do the lay up myself. I will try the knee board first, for practice, don't have to be pretty. If it goes well, I will tackle the cockpit sides, and other bits.

Why cut the sides off? Grind the finish off and laminate the inside and out.

Weight. The cockpit is1/4" and doubled up on both sides for reinforcement. I guess replacing with CF plied foamboad would shave 3 to 4 pounds. My big question is how much of the existing ply to leave aft to support the transom.

I assumed it was a safety feature you wanted to add, but you are mainly looking to save weight. If that's the case you'll need to be careful in how you attach the new piece and finish it out because it could end up being heavier! If the new piece is laminated to the transom I would see no need to leave any wood, but if you need to leave some of the original side 18" should be plenty.

                  Mark,
                  Just my 2 cents...

If you are looking to lighten your boat w composite c-sides, I'm assuming it's to go faster :-)

Redoing the sides is quite a job to do and composites aren't real cheap. Another option is to use the money to buy a new prop and spend the hours it would take to rebuild and go testing. You can never get enough boat time.

Probably doesn't help the beer drinking, but I think you may get better results.

I am up to 9 props now, so that is ongoing testing. Played a lot with trim and mixture too. I am lucky, live on a lake that puts up with my test sessions.
I figure doing the sides will keep me from going crazy waiting for first race in the spring.

Awesome! Sounds like you have it covered!

Feel free toPM if you have any questions on the rebuild.
