  • Boat Cart Questions

    Hello All.

I am about to build a boat cart, but googling up "Boat Cart" I quickly learned that boat carts for a hydro, are just not coming up. Plenty of stuff for canoes and other funky types.

Can a couple of you guys post a picture of your boat cart that I can use for reference?

Also, are people using 1" sq tubing .062" wall thickness?

    Thanks
    Bill

I used 1 1/2" square steel tube for the uprights to support the axle, screwed to wooden 2x4's the length of the boat.

      Bill:

I have a nice set of scale plans I drew up for my boat carts. PM me with your e-mail address, and I'll send you the .PDF.

I used 1 and 1 1/4 inch steel tubing for the main runner so that one could slide inside the other. The front vertical support slides off completely, and the main runner bolts to the rear "axle". The wheels come off with a pin, and if I decide to use something other than the $3.95 sale wheels from Harbor Freight, all I have to change is the front vertical support. The whole thing collapses down and fits in the car (no trailer here, the ASH rides on top of the car). The vertical supports are 1 inch. I used essentially Michael's design.

The attached pictures are before it was painted with POR-15.

              Hey Guy's,

I'd like to thank all those that responded to this post and to those that sent me pictures of their Cart. Also a HUGE thanks to Dave for sending me the plans.

Well, .. I made my boat cart. I kind of took a little from everyone and made my own. I had a busy day yesterday, cutting and welding. As soon as it was done, ... I put my Spartan on the cart, and shot the Spartan with three decent coats of primmer.

Here is a shot of the back of the cart and one primed Hydro. I'll take a few pictures of it tonight after I get the boat off of it. I need to flip the boat to shoot color on the bottom.

              Again, ... Thanks Guy's!

Here is the cart. I still need to clean up the welds, paint it and add some wood and carpet on the pads.

Bill, you may want to consider putting some webbing (45 degree cross brace)at the point where the tounge meets the axel. There can be a lot of torque stress if one wheel drops in a hole while backing into the water or pulling out. Jack

Exactly right, Jack. The plans I drew up use those gussets, and they give the carts a lot of extra strength and rigidity. No trouble putting my CSH on these carts. The larger wheel barrow wheels help too as they go over grass, mud, and sand very easily.

Don't want to rain on your parade, you did a nice job. With the solid piece across the back you are going to have trouble checking prop shaft depth and kick out/in. Examples shown show a couple of pads to support the back. You might want to do some modifications. I did that too in the beginning.

                        Thanks guy's,

I plan on adding the triangles on the axle, ... I just didn't have them so I went and picked them up today and will add them tonight.

As far as the back bar, ... I have that tacked on and it is easily removable. I was planning on adding the 4" squares, but my wife suggested the angle iron as it gives a larger area for the boat to sit on. We both thought it could be ugly if the boat shifted on the cart when pulling it from the water and the boat only sat on one pad and the other could carve the heck out of the side of the boat. I have the 4x4 squares, ... but first I think I will just put a 6" break in the middle of the angle. That will leave me enough room to check the motor alinement and give me the piece of mind that the boat is on there solidly.

I also picked up some aluminum to make some of the alignment tools like the angle and height checker.

Does anyone have a decent picture of the height checker? Everyone I have seen was real grainy.

                        Thanks

Funny you should ask. I just happen to have a pair of height and angle checkers for sale. My plan was to post them on HR in the next day or so. I don't have any photos on me right now, but I'll try to get them loaded tonight.

                            Michael,

What are you asking for the pair and are they for the Yamato?

Yes. They'll work on a Yamato. I'm asking $100 for the pair; I will cover the cost of shipping.
