  • Prop Questions

    Hello all,

I am new to the boat scene and wanted to learn about props but first let me tell you what I have.

I have built a Glen-L Super Spartan 10'2" hydro and the width of the hull at the transom is 34". I ALSO have a Yamato 102 with a stock 2 blade prop. I "DO NOT" intend to race this boat, ... just to go fast (SAFELY).

My question is, ... Where can I go to learn about the different types of props, their shapes, blade count and what they will do as far as performance.

    Thanks
    Bill

Get in touch with DeWald propeller.
Talk to David or Craig, tell them what you have and what you want to do with it.
They can build you a prop that will get you in the ball park on the first try.
Also, I would guess that your motor has the factory propshaft on it. DeWald can make a prop to fit right on it.

        Thanks Guy's,

I know I can call someone and order a prop, but I wouldn't know what the heck I was ordering, or why I was ordering that particular prop and not another.

What I am looking for is information that deciphers a propellers construction and shape to get performance. Trial and error testing seems pointless unless I had 10 props to try, which is out of the question. I have nothing to reference it to and I dont know what to look for while on the water.

Think of it this way, ... Everyone knows that if you put gas in a car and turn the key, the motor runs, put it in gear and the tires spin. But what some dont know is how all those parts work together to get the wheels to spin.

That is the information I am looking for.

          Props

As Jeff said earlier call Craig. He will tell you ALL that you will need to know about props. I have talked to him numerous times as I had some of your same questions. He will explain in great detail what your already asking for.

Also there is Ron Hill who is on here that makes props and could answer your questions as well.

They might know of places you can go to and read more.

              Thanks Steve,

That's a great start and is basically what I am looking for ,... now if i can find one that goes a little deeper into the subject.

Usually when I call someone with 50 million questions, ... just ask me 20 minutes later what I remember, ... only about 50% of it and again half that as each day goes by.

Reading or watching a video like that, I can come back to it, ... and they wont say, ... I just told you last week, ...

Thanks just trying to help you.
There's more if you can stand it?
Of course once you read up do ask questions of the prop makers and in the final you need to test but hopefully you can better zero in on a prop or two. Ask around to borrow props to test. Ask questions here, no question is a bad question only one that is not answered.

                        More articles

Not all deal with racing props but all deal with water props. Remember the real deal on props is to talk to the prop makers, test, take good notes, safety equipment and somebody in a chase boat, and do one thing at a time.

                        Have fun

From the Naval Academy on surface piercing props:

I have tech articles in hard copy from the Navy on high speed surfacing props that were given to me by Admiral B. Temple when I worked at a marine research facility in the 1970's where he was CEO. Can't locate them on the web and if I can figure a way to scan as a single PDF I will make them available.

This book has a lot of interesting info. For $11 on Amazon it is a good deal and reference:
