CUNNINGHAM RODS MAKES CUSTOM RODS FOR OUTBOARDS.
He uses a blank forging 4340 steel for the custom F1 mercs .
The are changing lengths and the rods are lighter and stronger
    Than factory.

      Buttons

I am going to cut a 1/2 inch off of the wrist pin and set it in the piston 1/4 inch back from the "C" clip on both sides. Then I will turn down some high temperature plastic called Alltemp to fill the wrist pin and the 1/4 inch space on the ends by machining a shoulder in it.
Radial aircraft engines used aluminum buttons to retain the wrist pins for decades. Would do the same thing here, and not require the wrist pin to be cut and get rid of the clips.

The button ended pins only work if the pin ends don't traverse any ports without bridges, aircraft engines were more often than not 4 stroke so the pin ends didn't tend to pass over any ports.

You are right. That's what you get when you shoot your mouth off without thinking something through.

There are several Merc Drag/Offshore/F1 Engine builders that will lighten & Plug
              Wrist pins for OUTBOARD ENGINES.

In a cross flow two stroke the wrist pins do not cross the ports.

That's only true where the transfer & exhaust ports are on the side of the cylinder, the majority of deflector & looper singles & opposed twins had their exhausts on the bottom of the cylinder & the transfers on the top, as did the Anzani racers that had an inverted copy of the lower cylinder on the top.

I believe that Sonny was talking about Mercurys but you are right but the Anzani was one of the few that had the ports top and bottom. Mercury and OMC had the ports on the sides except the loopers.

Here in the UK we didn't see many Mercury racers as the Anzani Loopers & the Konig deflectors running on gas ruled the roost in the late 50's.
It's a shame that the manufacturers didn't really quote power outputs in those day as it would be interesting to make the comparison.
The only figures I've got, are for the Konig B racing deflector 19.87 cu. in.
                      36 hp @ 7000 with a single carb, & Boat Sport's figures are 30 @ 7000 with a twin carb, though I don't know when that was published.

This won't be helping the chap who wanted to make himself some Ti rods, Sorry.
