  • Help for new guy CSH

I am looking for as little guidance from some of you experienced guys. I'm not trying to stir up a hornets nest here but I need advice on 2 stroke oil...

I will be running CSH with a Y-102 and I was wondering what oil you have had good luck with for that engine. Also, do you pretty much stick with the ratio Yamato recommends?

Also, since I am new to racing, I am trying to get a list of what I should bring to my first race (tools, supplies, etc). Do you guys have any lists you would be willing to share?

    Thank You,
    Pete

A guy that helps me out has me mixing about 4 oz. of synthetic per gallon.
Some people have told me less, and some a little more, but I have been told that a little richer doesn't hurt performance.

Get yourself a little piece of cheater pipe, a short piece of pipe that will fit over the transom clamp handles so that you can get your motor more than "hand tight." Have lots of sheer pins, extra steering cable clamps.

        Getting ready for a race.

        Hi Pete,
Welcome to boat racing. First thing we really need to know is the size of your trailer box if you have one. We use a large enclosed trailer and carry everything we need to work on an engine which includes a generator and power tools.

For starters make sure you have a first aid kit to handle the minor cuts you might get. Here is a small list for starters and hope others add to it.

        1. Bring a small assortment of hardware for both the boat and engine.
        2. Spare prop and hopefully over time you will have a few.
        3. Spare shear pins and nuts.
        4. Basic tool set that covers the sizes of the fastners on your engine with a hammer and punch to get failed shear pins out.
        5. A couple sets of spark plugs will come in handy at times.
        6. A couple starting ropes in case you misplace one.
        7. Enough fuel to allow for testing and the race event. Single clase should do fine with 5 gallons over the weekend.
        8. Duck tape comes in handy.
        9. An assortment of rev sticks for engine transom setup.
        10. A can of WD-40 and CRC electro clean can also be helpfull.
        11. Extra engine tieback rope.
        12. A boat cart helps a lot at the race but if you don't have one then horses are needed.

When your at a race site don't be bashfull when you need help. All of us are happy to see someone join the sport and will be happy to help when your in need. Talk to the other drivers and the folks that support the race team to get what you need answers to.

          Fuel...............

Ethonol free 93 octane mixed 20:1 with non-synthetic oil!!........ Mercury or OMC TCW-3 is fine!

Straight Synthetic oil is not the way to go........in my opinion.

          Have fun!

            What Captain said...

            Hey Pete,

Matt's right: We run 20:1 with basic OMC TCW III (non-synthetic) and our motors run strong, clean and are well lubricated when we tear them down.

Unleaded, non-ethanol fuel is also what you want. It's getting harder to find depending upon what part of the country you're in, but it's out there.

We use two stroke Mercury oil with no problems. We use one quart per 5 gallons of gas. Very easy to mix that way.

                      From the MHRA web site:

Nylon or swim-shorts (you will get wet and want something that fits under the driving suit).

Water shoes or tennis shoes that you don’t mind wearing in the water (again you will get wet).

                      A change of clothes.

A canopy comes in handy on those hot days.
Extra money for hard to find parts such as spark plugs.
Air for cart tires for you and your neighbors.
A BIG EAR for listening to advice from fellow racers, soak it all in and take notes. Watch other drivers to see how they prepare for a race, never be caught without your gear on and green flag starts waving.
Last but not least, if you see some one that needs help on the beach or a lift to get motor started, jump in and help because you WILL need help sooner or later.
