      minutes

it looks like J, OPC, and PRO have posted thier 2011 minutes but MOD and stock have not yet . It would be nice to know what rules the mod and stock commissions have changed so we can prep for the 2011 season.

The APBA 2011 rules are posted on their site and reinforcement is required on Pro boats and only recomended for stock and mod. Also for Mod Laydown boats mirrors are required and you must have rounded pickle forks and nose cowl.

To each his own. I like them and would use them even if not required. They work for me.

                  Mike:

Please double-check this against the rules. I just looked and as far as I can tell Rule 23 (a) on page 3 of the General Safety Rules says RECOMMENDED for both PRO and STOCK, and doesn't mention MOD.

I would think, that if a rule change were made, that would require such a high percentage of participants to undertake such a major structural modification in their equipment; more than a couple of months would be given to make the change.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though. And as a builder I would think that you would be strongly encouraging your customers to choose to reinforce theirs on new boats or face the music when the inevitable happens.

That being said, I hope that a rule change along those lines would give a future season start date in the language. (I.E... strongly recommended for all open cockpit hydroplanes and will BE required on all boats beginning NOV 1, 201x...)

Please let me know if you find contrary language (and where you locate it).

                  Thanks,

You also have to use the Mod Outboard Tech manual to get all the rules. Like I said it is confusing but the only requirements for mod are two mirrors on a laydown and a rounded nose and pickles on all versions. THESE are the highlights with no side wall SUGGESTIONS that I see. Stock has suggestions but no requirements for sidewalls. Pro has a recommendation for sidewall reinforcement per UIM min requirements.

The way I read it is that nothing is required for sidewalls but it is up to the boat build as to what the new owner will want unless they are running UIM.

                      Mike:

I run PRO, so reading your post saying "required in PRO" just made my heart stop working for second.

Glad to hear you read it the same as I do now.

Thanks about the step by step build. I must say if someone wanted a reinforced cockpit I would do what they want but most folks don't want the added expense or the added weight. If it were to become required then it becomes a different story. I guess time will tell.

                            added weight?

Methinks MJR experimented with vac bagged composite sidewalls and made panels lighter than the normal plywood structures for sidewalls. Expensive, but I don't believe there is added weight for a composite sidewall that will help keep your body from damage.

Hard to retrofit, but I think reenforced cockpit sides are a great idea on a new boat in any category.

                              Sponson tips

                              Steve,

Another key to success besides communication is reading the rules. Wait a minute..... isn't that a form of communication in itself????

If your boat was built after October 31 2007, it must have the rounded tips. If it doesn't your beef needs to be with your boatbuilder and not some sort of commission boogeyman that is out to get us.

Take some time to read the 2011 rules while playing your happy chime and relax!
