Quincy Welding did it back in the 1950's when welding technology was not as advanced as today. I am certain your results would be better than theirs, but heavier pistons are less desirable. Better results would come from welding on the head.

Quincy routinely welded pads into the cylinders of headless blocks.

            New or Used

If it is a used piston the weld may not adhere as well due to the oil and gas impregnated into the pores of the aluminum.

If it is a new piston, your results may be better. I still would not count on it as being trouble free. Lots of warping going on, and if you are trying to increase compression, there are other ways to achieve the desired results. Sam touched on one.

At any rate, you never know unless you try it. It has been done for over 40 years.
