  • Carb question?

Are there any different brand of carbs that will fit an OMC 45sst intake and work as good or better than the originals? Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Thomas

    Try Mikunis

Try Mikunis... The slide type. Call Rex Hall at 816-532-4588. He would know and he knows where to get them.

    Good Luck.

Also try e-Bay. There are hundreds of Mikuni carburetors of various sizes on there at any given time; assorted jets too. You'll want a "flat slide".

        Thank you!

Thanks guys! What I know of the Mik's (motorcycle) require a round intake boot. How does one adapt the boot to a OMC intake? It is very interesting if it can be done!! Thomas

If you look at enough Mukinis on eBay, you will see the answer yourself

              Find Good 45 Carburators

              Hello Thomas aka Sprintracer93,

I had no idea you were going to run OPC or Stock 45. I figured you were going to run the motor in a Mod class.

My suggestion now is to find a good set of the correct carburators.

Call RJ or Ron Hill or Bill Curtis and they will help you find the correct carburators.

              Good Luck,

Maybe I'm taking this answer of yours the wrong way, but I was not trying to be snide in thanking you guys for your prior responses to my question. I really thought someone would tell me how it was done. Apparently I was wrong on this assumption.

                  Sorry

                  Sorry,

I assumed you were a Mod racer who was making changes to the motor and was used to making changes.

I still recommend getting some stock carburators. Can the ones you have be rebuilt??

                  Good Luck and Best Regards,

                    Thanks Dean

I thought by seeking another brand of carburetors it would be cheaper than the much sought after and limited supply of "legal" OMC carbs. Again, I'm only running for the fun of it.

After experiencing racing on the water after 16 years of car racing, it was a rush to say the least. I didn't necessarily want to give up boat racing in it's entirety to go back to car racing but I would have if it meant discontinuing car racing. I know boat racers will not like to hear this, but car racing is my first passion. My parents funded the purchase of the sprint car and will fund it's associated costs of running it at the tracks. On the other hand, I purchased the race boat.

The reason why I'm being so chintzy with the race boat is because I attend college full time and my part time job at a pizza restaurant is paying for my 45 and it's subsequence expenditures associated with it. My parents like to watch me race a boat too and agreed to tow the boat to the races and help out with the traveling costs ie, motels and such. Anyway, I bought the boat from Mr. Bill Curtis and I got in touch with him and he does have a set of good carbs for me to purchase. Thank you again for your suggestions and interest.

                    Sincerely, Thomas

You can be beached before racing starts if it is known your equipment is not legal ... then you are not even a legal starter to help your friends ... you have to have the right parts

                        Thomas... Great

                        Thomas,

Great.... A good set of stock carburetors will probably be cheaper in the long run. You would of had to make an adapter plate or do something if you were to use Mikunis.

What is the price of a set of stock carburetors??

Good Luck and see you at the races.

                          Hi Sam

I know you have the best intentions for me on this matter but why would you think a conducting club would not let me run if they know before hand that I'm not running for points nor will I accept any finishing place award? I don't want anything except to go out and race the boat just for the simple reason to have fun! Personally I don't see any harm in it and the club gets a little revenue in the deal.

You see, it's not only the carbs which may not turn out to be legal, but it's my block too. It's a 1977 block which has the looper hole in the piston skirt. Beside that, even if I had the legal block I would need to have a legal crank and rods. Fishing rods with the wrist pin oiler hole is illegal. Legal crank and rods (Sea-way) are very expensive.

My first priority is my sprint car and if my parents need a little help with entry fees or buying some tires this is what I'll have to do with the little extra money I have saved up. I cannot afford to go out and buy a $1500 to $3000 powerhead just to be legal when all I want to do is go out and have some fun on the water with the other guys. I know I wouldn't be alarmed if some other guy was in my shoes trying to do the same thing; especially knowing he/she isn't racing for points or finish order places.

Anyway, thanks for the warning. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how things turn out.

Wishing you a safe and successful year in racing!

                          Sincerely, Thomas Leiby

                            I understand now!

                            To the 45 racers:

I received a call this morning from a friend who races boats and he fully explained to me why I can't run illegal carbs or engine! I completely understand how it can effect the outcome of points throughout the nation. The good news is I also found a powerhead which is legal that I can make payments on.

I would also like to thank all of you for being so polite in trying to convince me I can't run illegal carbs in the 45 class. Hopefully you can understand I'm just a car racer who was ignorant to how the point system is conducted in APBA racing.

Take care and have a safe racing season!

                            Thomas
