Why not take of the starter ring and make it 6lb.?

The last time I tried this the thing broke up.

I was told by an OMC designer that all of the strength in the OMC cast flywheels is in the outer skin.

            I say no.

Risky business jeff! don't jeopardize your own saftey or those unknowing people in the vicinity of a possible flywheel explosion by experimenting in an area where you probably are not an expert! I can tell you for sure, that a 3cyl omc generates a very powerful fore and aft shaking force which puts a lot of stress into a rigid flywheel. Enough in some cases to actually "weld" the taper or even break the crankshaft. No hearsay, seen it happen

I have seen alot of vary bad things happen with omc flywheels STOCK.thay crack and break vary easy.I am an omc mechanic i have to say do not try it.those flywheels are good for a service engine in a cowl were it can fly apart.if u dont have a cowl forget it.find a flex flywheel these things have to still be out there.

                    Flywheel

Cannot understand why the OMC people have not gone to a aftermarket ignition. We run a MSD battery powered ignition on our Yamaha it has a less than 1 lb. aluminum flywheel. You would not believe how small a battery we use. Weight is not an issue nor is battery life, lasts all day. Its not cheap, but is dependable. It is also programable. We have had it upside down. Took the plugs out got the engine half way dry put the top plug in fired on the first pull, put the other plugs in and made the 2nd heat. No residual problems from getting it wet.
