  • SST 90 Question

Hi fellow racers,Justsetting up a boat for my son.The class is 1250 cc,the hull is an f3 tunnel hull..Most other competitors use the omc 31m..Bit dated.Iwas thinkingof maybe sleevingdown a sst 90 ? Is there any better options besides this or the half V6 monstrosity...I would greatly appreciate any input,,,,Regards Chris

THe best guy to talk to is Mark Major in Canada who is probably the most successful SST-90 driver I know of. You may be able to locate him on the net. Also, Mike Weinandt knows the SST-90 very well via SST-70 racing in Minnesota and Kankakee. They are heavy beasts so a North American SST-60 may be a little small but a Euro F3 tunnel is just right.

I played with a number of Merc motors back when SST-90 first came out until we racers voted to change the class to SST-120. The 90 motor was a fairly low rpm device and had nowhere near the performance we wanted. I found the half-V-6 using the starboard side of a basic chrome bore 2.4 block was much better. We didn't use the 2.4 bridgeport block because it wasn't a legal SST-70 block them, ie production based. But half of the 2.4 bridgeport block would be better. Find a #6 gearcase and if you are really serious, take out one pinion. And hit up either Mike or Jerry Wienandt for the little details.

            SST 90 Powerheads

Any collectors / vintage guys out there looking for an SST 90 powerhead?

I have two, taking up space, here, along with a few odd small parts and the lower unit adapter casting and tuner. Both are complete powerheads with ignition, carbs and reverse rotation starters and flywheels.

These mounted on the V-6 driveshaft housing with SSM 6 and used the V-6 plastic cowls, same as early SST 140 and SST 120.

Any interest, drop me a note at tridentracing@new.rr.com

            Jerry
