APBA Stock & Mod Commision approved the Bass-Tohatsu 50HP as a probationary D-stock, D-Mod and FE for the 2004 racing season. I assume they will be considering the engine for these classes. AOF and NBRA seem to favor the proposal and are likewise considering this engine.
If you wish for engine specifications and performance data, please let me know.
Respectfully,

Tohatsu ??
Neil;
Re; "...probationary D-stock, D-Mod and FE.."
-are you configuring the power-head the same for mod as well as stock?
We [I] did not see one of these run in the n/east this summer.
-how did they go out west?
-can you [will you?] supply a power-head only for FEH use?
-was this power-head ever used on a service motor in NA?

Tohatsu
We prepared a D-stock prototype and entered as many races out west as we could get to. The stock power head mounted on a Bass Machines tower and lower unit consistently competed in the top three. We tried a number of propellers and found a D-stock propeller and a 45SS propeller that worked well. Typically out of the turn at 6400 RPM and about 6800+ at the end of the shoot. Our top RPM was 7150, but that propeller was 3 MPH slower. Speeds at the end of the shoot were typically 75 MPH. No doubt that performance will improve with more “playing”. We listed this stock version for $5,700 this spring. As you might expect, prices are subject to changing import costs.
Under our EPA authorization we must sell a complete racing engine. However, for the mod division we plan to make a “less stock” version available at a lower price. Until the Mod Division identifies the mod rules for this engine we can not give you a solid price.
This power head was introduced to the USA in 1992 as a model M50D. The version we are sell is a M50D2, which is nearly identical to the previous version. I believe the M50D2 engine was introduced in the USA in about 1998, but under current EPA rules the engine is not sold in the USA. The M50D was raced in OPC some years ago, but I do not know the class.
For the mod mechanics, the transfer port timing is about 58 degrees and the exhaust port timing is about 82 degrees.
Attached is our brochure for the D-stock version.
You can get current lower unit and tower housing pricing from Sid Bass at (360) 373-3839.

Neil Bass
