I've only done a test Kev. Yesterday did another. This time I mixed some already made
Mahogany stain with the Varnish. It worked even better, because I didn't have to worry about the red to brown ratio...I just added stain untill I got it only as dark as I wanted.

I'm not using much, because I don't want to corrupt the varnish...just enough to give it a color shift from Okume yellow to Mahogany.

Besides, I don't have a digi camera, and don't have Broadband out here in Ranch Country.

If you already have a "few" coats of vanish applied. I don`t think you are going to like the look of stain over varnish. If you use a brush, you will have brush marks, if you spray you will have lite and dark spots, according to the thickness of the sprayed stain. Best to remove all the finish, to bare wood, and then apply a coat of sanding sealer, this prevents the soft spots in the wood from absorbing too much stain. Then stain. The shortcuts won`t work.

Yeah, Im sure you are right...But i'm thinking just tint the varnish.
You know, like varnish already has an Amber color? I want to put it a little more in the Mahogany camp. Not much, not so much that it will be too obvious, unless you see it side by side.

            It Worked (so far)

            Done.

2 coats, wet sanded between... over wet sanded existing coats,
worked great. turned the yellowish Okume to a nice light mahoghany.

            Difference is night and day.

            Varnish cured nicely.

            Thanks for everyone's comments.

              Ok Kev-Before and After

Here is a before and after of the tinted varnish.[[ATTACH]15823[ATTACH]15824
The before was taken in bright sun, so it is a little more on the yellow side than it was in reality, but even so, big difference.

The boat looks good. How did it run for you? Oh and also the top picture is the boat with just west system on it. No varnish was put on it yet.

Looks great. Did you brush or spray it? What was the final amount of stain (%) that you used or was that a by eye amount?. What brand of varnish and stain did you use?

I used a foam brush and didn't "work" it a lot back and forth, just tried to flo it on, but not too thick.

As far as the percentage of stain, I just did a lot of testing, to find what I liked best. Remember that every coat will darken so, figure amount of stain based on how many coats you will need eventually.

I used a good brand varnish, and Sherwin Williams Mahogany stain. I used much more stain than I thought I would.

I've seen the boat in person and I can tell you it is beautiful. Well done Mark!

                        Wagner built

Thanks Dennis, but the real congrats go to Rick Wagner Sr. who built the boat. Looked at a lot of new and almost new boats, and a "Wagner Built" MJR,
                        is out front in craftmanship.
