  • 302 unit on d mod?

We have tried running the 302 unit and was wondering what size shaft you guys use. We changed it to the 9/16 shaft so the pin hole is right but I am now thinking that might be a bad idea. The stock shaft is bigger but the pin hole is in the wrong place, and I have heard that it is not legal to have 2 pin holes. Also has anybody blown the gears on a d mod??

    Thanks Kevin

    Prop shaft

Kevin, I have run 9/16 prop shafts for many years in my 44's turn down Merc. never had a problem ,if the Yamato shaft is as strong as a Merc it should work just as well. Congrats on your win at tha W. Nalts.

Kevin, I have been running the shaft Dudly put in my 102 gear box for 3 years and havent had a problem, only downfall I see is it has a 3/16 pin Jeff, that sideways motor probally has way to much horse power for any gear box, lol Larry sure can build them. Congrats on your DMR win last weekend

I believe there are a couple of FE's out there with a 302 foot on 'em. Nosecone and water pickup added, of course.

I have not heard of one failing yet. D Mod should be no problem.

Maybe one of the FE guys can weigh in?

            On A FE ?

It should fail immediately on one. There is no bearing support fore and aft.

On a D Mod I have seen it used. Vanover ran one for while until he discovered the joys of the Hatchet. Not sure what shaft though.

Not legal to have two shear pin holes in Mod ? I don't think that is a rule in Mod, stock I would believe it, but not Mod. I have had two pin holes in mine before.

When you have the smalled pin hole we simply drill out two millimeters larger and it makes a world of difference on shear pins not shearing. (Hatchet). I would assume the same with the 302 box.

Kevin, I hear you were flat smoking fast in that new boat, congrats. Now I gotta come up with something to catch you.

Thanks for the input. The gears look pretty big and strong. I was just wondering if the 9/16 shaft will hold.
