Which wire or terminal do I pick up the tachometer signal from?

  • #2
    tach signal

    Hey proprider,

What tach are you using? with the electronic Tiny tach the red wire is wrapped around two plug wires. I will have to look in the manual to see what terminal off the switchbox is used, in the fishing application the tach is a three wire affair from Mercury and is located in the wiring harness to the control box and the tach plugs into that. There is no specified tach terminal that I remember. I will look and let you know.

        Thanks

Thank you for the reply. All I could find about Merc. was that the tach lead was gray. No gray on the 44xs. I show that the yellow wires are for a starter and rectifier, and it appears as though the factory just cut them off flush. Should I be using the one for the rectifier? Or do I have my info wrong?

yes, use one of the yellow leads from the rectifier.........also make sure you have the correct pole setting on that Gaffrig tach (very nice unit though!).

              Tach

              Hey Joe,

You could extend those two yellow wires down to a rectifier and a red wire from the + side of the rectifier to the Battery and it would charge your battery from full state if you were running electric start.

Then as Daren said take your tach feed off one of the yellow terminals on the rectifier.

Are you sure on this Daren, I have never done it that way in the past. I have never ran that tach either.

yes, this is the way Merc does it on most of their outboards, that is why is it important to get a tach with the corresponding pole settings to coincide with the engine's stator.........of course, this is for the "pleasure use" motors, but if the motor has a stator and the rectifier, then it will work........oh ya, this is all true if you are using a battery, thus using electric start, which the Gaffrig tack will require battery power. Otherwise, use a Tiny Tach or a Digitron.
