  • Building a Merc J

    I am getting a bunch of Merc/Mariner stuff given to me. Is anything from 1999 and newer usable for the J and AX as long as it is 9.9 or 15?
    There are a couple complete powerheads, a few flywheels,towers, carbs, and misc. powerhead parts.

    Thanks for any help.

        There is no doubt that George knows what to do with Merc 15 parts. We had a motor from George hit the the water the first time at Whitney Point. The motor was run in three classes AXSR,JR and AXSH, with a 3rd,4th and a 5th. Not bad for the first time on the water!!! Thank You George,Rocky Peterson

            Russ the 9.9 and 15 are the same powerhead just the 15 has a bigger carb and a tuner pipe in the tower. The short blocks are the same from 1995 to present just have to trim the top where the stator bolts on on the 1995 thru 1998 so the later stator fits.You have to use the later ign from 1999 to present. The 6,8,9.9 and 15 have the same ign. conecting rods and cranks. The very early rods had allen bolts then were changed to cap bolts. The very early cranks had a different seal set up on the bottom but were changed to the newer set up around 1990. The pistons for the 9.9/15 are the same from 1988 to present. There are three different flywheel, the very early one which used a different starter top, the two magnet ones and the 1999 to present one is the only leagle one with four magnet. There are two different towers 1988 to 1994 and 1995 to present but the only difference is the way you adjust the co-pilot and the size of the clamping screws.The 1999 to present 25hp has the same ign except for the flwheel.The early reed blocks were aluminum and cant be used the newer ones are steel with a plastic coating and built in sealing surfaces and are the correct ones.The blocks from 1988 to 1994 had two oval ports and cant be used and the 1995 to present have two big square ports and are the ones to use. There are no certain block numbers that are better then others, my best motor has a factory replacement block and has won two nationals my second motor is a 2002 fishing motor and has won this years national and my third motor which I sold is a 1999 from a fishing camp in Canada won the nationals in AXSR last year so it doesnt mater which year block is used. Val wont the nationals in AXSH three years in a row and with three different motors but the same prop and boat.

              Joey is 12 now so I figure it is time to let him start building motors so he can see the ins and outs of it.

                Building Things

                Russ, you are doing a great job in "building" a fine young man. The time shared in building that engine will be woth a fortune in experiences and fond memories. Have fun! I envey the both of you. I will always remeber my dad helping me with the cooling on an old engine. Tell Joey I said hello. Jack

                  Good morning Mr. Stotts,
                  I will tell Joey you said hello!
                  When I was running J's and A's both Mom and Dad worked. It was "OK" way back then for a kid to be home alone during the day. When school let out in the summers Dad made sure I had several piles of Mercury J and A parts. I would hit the shop in the mornings and stay there all day building and tinkering. Dad would check my work at night but always gave me freedom to try new things with the motors. Joey has spent the last month and a half in that same shop with the same tools looking at all the great memories.
                  Joey has had a great time this year in his rookie season. With me missing two months of racing due to the leg injury and missing the Nationals and the September races due to the situation with Dad I have to say that the boat racing family is also doing a great job stepping in and helping to "build"
                  Joey.
                  We don't know yet how fast his motors will be but the main thing is we are going to have fun.
