  • Questions about setup on 25SSH

    Here are my starting points. I would like to know a few things;
    1. Is this a good boat (I weigh 205 lbs, yeah, I'll make weight easy)
    2. What is a suggested geometry for my airtraps?
    3. What motor height should I start with?
    4. What motor angle should I start with?
    5. What prop would be a good starting point?
    6. With 4.5" dia. steering hub, use direct or indirect steering cables?
    7. *** What rpms should the 25XS be run *** ????

Purchased the boat from, I think, Nate Bowers #76-S two years ago.
He ran a Yamato on it and had built up the transom height using
honeycomb aluminum panels and a spacer block. I have epoxied in a
filler block of marine plywood and a 3/16" backing board across the
    entire transom.
I added motor tie-down eyes on the transom so the lifting handles
won't have to be used to tie down the motor. It's got a 4-1/2"
diameter steering hub, which is between the standard 3-1/2" and 5-
1/2" steering hub diameters I am familiar with.

    19xx? B&H Hydro
    10ft 3in overall length
    35in wide bottom
72in afterplane(?) bottom length from transom to back of sponsons.
15-3/4" wide cockpit, offset to the left slightly (didn't measure)

I was anticipating a great offering of setup secrets to be offered in this thread.

Come on guys. Help us rooks out a little. My dad will be running his 25SSH at Ocoee as a rook and needs some of these very same questions answered.

Thanks 25XS for bringing them up.

      Steve.

1A) I'm 195 so should be close to the same.
        2. What is a suggested geometry for my airtraps?
        2A) ???? Not sure I follow.
        3. What motor height should I start with?
3A) With My Snider Spyder I had two settings 5/8 and 1/4"
        4. What motor angle should I start with?
        4A) I used to run 1/16 - 3/16" TUCKED IN
        5. What prop would be a good starting point?
5A) varies but I always ran a High Rake cleaver. 6/15-16 - 7" Diameter and 11.25 - 12.75 Pitch, I will bring you a prop to try if you like.
        6. With 4.5" dia. steering hub, use direct or indirect steering cables?
        6A) DIRECT ONLY
        7. *** What rpms should the 25XS be run *** ????
        7A) 8000 MIN

How much lift in the boat?

Tom I will be at Jesup and Ocoee just bring the boat over and I will help you get it set up.
Destiny is a matter of chance,it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

I will definitely do that and I really respect and appreciate your advice. The problem is that I live just North of Atlanta, GA and there are no 25SSH races or boats around here to ask. (except the Stock Nat's... Where there will be NO Testing allowed). Therefore I am gathering up as much info as I can right now, online, and I'll take it to the Mod Nat's in Jesup, GA and test a couple days before, then drag it to Ocoee for the Stock Nat's the following weekend and do my best.

Actually, I'm getting great info. I'm really looking forward to getting around the other 25 hydros at Ocoee.

The guy I bought the boat from ran a Y80... I had to rebuild the transom to go back to a 25XS motor.

                    25XS questions

                    Todd,
I sent you a personal e-mail last Friday with some answers and cautions but I never received acknowledgment? You have asked great questions but they are hard to answer without knowing your boat. It would take several long conversations and a little more feedback from your testing sessions to analyze your set-up and handling. Just to give you an example, last racing season I started testing and racing my new B & H hydro in 25SSH....I flipped hard in the second heat of racing it....then spun out or lost control 3 more times in the suceeding weekends until I got the airtraps trimmed, moved the steering wheel aft about 3 inches, and got the motor angle/height finally adjusted. It was a rough season. Hope that you have a better time of it than I did. Call me at 740-319-5040 if you want some advice. Mike Marshall, Raceboat 61-S

To Mike Marshall: I got your email & printed it. I'll call you.

Mike, I got your email & printed it. I'll call you.

I am almost finished rigging the boat and hope to take it to Jesup, Ga to test. I have driven 25SSH in the past, just never with this particular hydro which I purchased for the primary reason that it seemed the faster 25SSH boats out there were the B&H designs.

                          Guys,
When the 25xs came out you had to run a restrictor plate in them. Do you still have to run the plate??
