    J Merc motors

This opens up the topic of , Now that the J motors that APBA had for sale are gone, Will there be any more? I dont know if the 15 -2 stroke is still available in an export version? I see that they now are advertising just the KITS in propeller. Hard to grow a class when there are no new motors available.

After 1997, the C.A.R.B. loonies banned the sale of small two stroke boat motors, so, you can't find a used 2 stroke Merc unless someone moved in, then the state check point did not sieze it.....

I have argued this point with you too many times Scoontz and you still do not get it.

anyways, just because the small 2 strokes are not sold NEW (yes, you still can use them) in Cali, does not mean they were not sold elsewhere. Merc stopped producing the 15hp 2 stroke in 2004 (dealer stock could have remained a little longer though) and you could buy one from a dealer in Cali (yes, the dealer I was at in San Diego still sold the small Merc 2strokes in 2005). All production small outboards for use in the USA are now 4 strokes. This might put the newcomers to J in a pickle, but there are lots of used motors out there available still.

Yep, ya just gotta find em, Daren. Never said you can't find small 2 strokes elsewhere, just not in the land of fruits and nuts.....Knit wittery in it's finest...
Kind of like, you restore a 1936 Auburn Boattail speedester.......All of which were painted at the factory in Auburn Indiana with laquer, much like every other car of their day....I, the owner, can go buy laquer paint, and paint it. I can also but it and paint my car....The bodyshop, however, cannot buy that same laquer and apply, you must provide it, and it is OK for them to apply it......

Can you see/feel my frustration here? you got a similar thing going on with small 2 stroke engines of all varieties, total combined run time, not even a fraction of other engines not regulated.....Thus, not even a fraction of the deterimentality the knit wits claim....Anyhow, move on...

On another note, is that your 63-C in the Stock outboard demo video? KT saw it and pinted it out the other night....

I heard they are available in Canada. Maybe someone could import them? Dave Scott?

All though Mercury has stopped making the 2 stroke 15 the last production dates I have were made in 2005 and those were the last ones APBA sold. Mercury is required by law to make parts for them for six years after the last production motor was made. There are tons of 9.9/15 used that can be used and got for a reasonable price and with all the parts still available and with APBA still making the conversion kits for them you can put one together for a reasonable price. Add that the Mariner is leagle to use and is the same motor as the Merc makes it even easier to find one. There are more 9.9's out there and by changing the carb and adding the tuner pipe it becomes a 15. Ok now a run down of what to look for, even though it states and 1999 or newer 15 you can actually use any 1995 or newer 9.9/15 motor. Mercury changed the blocks in 1995 and are the same as the newer motors. To make a 1995 to 1998 a legal motor the ign has to be changed to the 1999 or newer style. The stator, flywheel, and switch box are different the trigger and coils are the same. The 1999 or newer 6,8,9.9,15 and 25 all have the same ign and flywheel except the 25 which has a different flywheel. All 1990 and up 6,8,9.9 and 15 have the same crank, rods and pistons except the 6 and 8 hp models which have different pistons. My best motor was pieced together from parts from about 4 differnt year motors and a new replacement block. You can buy new stuff or check on ebay for used parts, I just picked up a complette 2000 ign system for a 25 for 50.00 which is the same as the 15 and last month picked up a new replacement 9.9/15 short block with all the covers and reed box for 300.00 off ebay. As long as there are used motors, conversion kits and Mercury is making parts for them there shouldnt be a problem getting Merc or Mariner motors to race. If anyone needs help or needs a question answered just ask and I will see if I can help.

maybe APBA should think about allowing the older 95 and up motors also. What is the weight difference between the older and new style flywheel? The different ignition systems (not really different, but more reliable (switchbox)) offer no spped advantages between the 2 and the higher output coils are already approved for use.

Daren I never really weighted the two magnet one but from picking them up they feel no different. I had asked about approving the earlier ign just because they are more plentyful but got no response. The late flywheels are hard to come by used but the early ones are a dime a dozen. A new 4 magnet flywheel list for around 325.00 and dealer net is 195.00.

                      Daren:

I have to agree w/ you on the new style switch boxes. Before we gave up on the Merc Lauren was running, we went through 3 switch boxes.

ya, the older style switchboxes were crap! Just about everyone of them would eventually fail. Kinda like the older OMC powerpacks.......

PS: good luck with the new A rig Joe!! Are ya leaving it orange??

maybe a proposal should be made up? That would allow ALOT more motors to be used..........

                            Add this:

From what the boys across the pond are running in JT250, (15HP Yamaha 2 strokes on 11 foot Vee hulls) they are telling us that the Yammy will eat a Merc for lunch. I say add them all to the mix and go for broke. That way, you won't have groups of people hoarding specific engines, and, you got brand to brand competition. Yamaha has put alot of money in numerous other forms of racing and it just might be another source. For that matter, why not just allow all engines with a cubic inch limtiation to 15 in J/AXS/A???? It makes no sense to keep only one or two brands....

Sell the fishing parts to get some money back towards the conversion kit.
