  • Safety Equipment

I am going to buy all new safety equipment before next year, Life Jacket and cut suit. Separate pieces. I have an all-in-one right now and I hate it.

Lifeline? Security? Price is about the same, a little on the high side of $1,000.00. They are both advertised on Hydroracer. Does anyone have an opinion if one is better than the other and why?

I wear Security Kevlar and a Life Line Jacket. Why? Because the Security Kevlar comes in black

Pat Gleason is a rep for Security, an outboarder, and a supporter of this site. For these reasons, plus a few others, I always buy Security stuff.

Pat: Do I get a discount for Lauren's next cutsuit for this?

You need to make sure the flack in whatever jacket you pick has as close to 360 degree coverage as possible. It was brought to the attention of the Commission 2 years ago that the flack in lifelines jackets had a significant percentage missing from the front which left vital organs vulnerable. I am pretty sure we brought this to their attention as well as the drivers so it could be fixed. The flack in the security jackets gives full frontal coverage.

One more thing....if you are buying any jackets for anyone who might be running stock, but may run PRO.....make sure the jacket has flack in it....or it will not be legal in PRO. I found that out the hard way with the kids and KPH.

Impact now standard in all SRP Jackets

2008 Rules (effective 11-1-07) mandate that impact be required in ALL outboard category jackets (SO, MO, PRO and J).

Security Race Products has been including impact as standard equipment in ALL of its outboard racing jackets since February of this year. And, we can add impact to any manufacturer's lifejacket that does not currently have impact.

Email me or PM me for specific info on any of the SRP Product line.

                Thanks,

Flak is a good idea in any catagory . . .

Back around `90 when my son upgraded his life jacket he had flak added, and I had flak in mine as well. We were running American Hot Rods in stock 15ssH and BSH and heard the nickname "American Hand Grenade" so we figured flak was good. Hot Rods behaved, but with flak we got to hitch rides in PRO boats!

Note: Only shrapnel injury I saw was when a KG-4 puked the mag plate & flywheel. Kid had a nice aluminum chunk stuck is his butt. Now that's a scar with a history!

In looking at the new Lifeline jackets, I noticed that the leg straps are simply sewn to the rear bottom of the jacket. I did not like that new configuration. I was looking at the stock/mod jackets with full impact.

Do your homework before you buy. Ask indepth questions of each manufacturer of safety products, APBA/AOF/NBRA safety committee leaders, prop makers, boat builders and those who have been involved in accidents.

Questions of concern for any racer should include:

                      1) What type of Kevlar do you use in your product and why?
                      2) What is the weight of your Kevlar and why?
                      3) What type of weave is your Kevlar and why?
                      4) How many layers of Kevlar does your product have and why?
                      5) Have you conducted testing of your product? If not, why not?
                      6) Has any testing of your product been done at any time in the past by others?
                      7) Although APBA only mandates Kevlar or Spectra, is the Kevlar you used designed for cut resistance or is it primarily for other uses?
                      8) Would you be willing to donate a sample of your product for consucting a test? If not, why not?
                      9) Are you aware of any past failures of your product? If so, was the product new or old?
                      10) Are you aware of product failures in competing manufacturers products?

I believe you should have cause for grave concern if any manufacturer cannot answer, or will not answer, any one of these questions - especially if you are out fitting a child.

I love my torso suit form Security via Pat. I had a lifeline previous and you would have to pay me to switch back. It has impact and it does float me. It is the absolute most comfortable jacket I have ever worn. I have more movement than I ever have. And I know it floats me as well. ( I found a deep hole while wading at Moses Lake ) It is also easy to keep on and do almost anything in. You hardly know it is on. Just my .02

Am I correct in that you are, or have been, an inspector or do I have my Jacks mixed up?

Tim, I have all Security Race Products safety gear.

Unless the Lifeline jackets have changed in the last few years they are too bulky in front for my liking (I have enough bulk in front already! ). The last couple of times that I bought a jacket I bought the Security PRO jacket with impact.

I've tried Kevlar and Spectra and don't like either of them (necessary evil though). The Spectra isn't as stiff as Kevlar is and is slightly more comfortable. I've tried straight cut and Z cut pants. I didn't like the Z cut. They were OK once I got in the boat but not before I got in or after I got out.

The last few items that I bought I bought from Patrick Gleason. Can't say enough good about him. Very helpful in every way. I'll continue to buy safety gear from him as long as I need to buy it and he's selling it.
                            ...

OMC FE/SE powerhead parts for sale. Kurcz ported block, Mod 50 pistons and cylinder head, exhaust, etc.

I just checked my Lifeline jacket and it is defective exactly as you describe. I looked at my receipt and see that I paid for flack; however, there is only one small piece in each side. Thank you for alerting me to this flaw in my jacket. This is now of serious concern to me. Maybe I should call them in the AM. Will Lifeline correct this defect for free?
