Wow. Dick was one of a kind. I remember spending weekends with he and Mickey at there home in West Haven, CT when I was a college student in New England. Dick put me to work many times at 2am in the morning helping make those tanks along with thrust brackets. We would go over to the Lenders Bagel Factory restaurant and get coffee and bagals after a while.
Dick was so good Paul Newman/Bob Sharp Racing basically offered him a blank check to join there team. Dick was however committed to Micky and the girls and knew that the traveling would make it impossible. Characters like Dick are what make racing great............
Unfortunatly Dick died several years ago but apparantly his gastanks will be collectors items forever. In 'the day' his tanks cost $25. Today 'priceless'.
Thanks Matt for your kind summary concerning Dick. Amen!! I personally knew Dick for thirty years. Great experience. If everyone could have a "Dick Fickett" pass through their lives once the world would be a better place.
Dick told me where to go for the flip caps. He wanted to use the screw on OMC ones. He had a better deal on them. It was fun when our paths crossed and we got to see each other. He did like the cart thing. Think he went home and made some after seeing the one I brought to Florida for the Grapefruit Races. If you see 64W's cart it was made 30 years ago. Think that should be the oldest one around. Only fitting for the Old Guy too. Spud
In the late 60's when I was hanging around the races, one of the coolest boats in the pits was the 6-D BSH Sid-Son of Dick Fickett. Ultra trick for its day. When I was old enough to drive, I started racing. I also started to hang out at Fickett's shop at night. First the two bay garage he rented in Milford, then at his house in West Haven. Learned how to weld aluminum looking over his shoulder. He was like a big brother and Micky was like a big sister. Two of the best people I have ever known.
I was around one weekend whan we built 100 set up checker. If you have one, look at the tack welds on it. If they are not that good, it is one of this batch....I welded them. Dick was faster on the band saw....
I put my self through college welding. I have supported this addiction to racing for the past 38 years welding at night building tanks and part for other racers. I have a very good job with a major aerospace company because of my welding background, that I learned from Dick.
I did a lot of growing up in West Haven in the early 70's with those two. Got to drive some fast boats and cars.
That was a time I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Looking for about a 3 qt tank that was used on the 1968 Mercury 60J "J" class racing outboard. Tank was mounted below the steering bar such as a 20H conversion, just smaller than the 4-5 qts size. dont know if Dick built any of those but Spud Hemp told me he did, so I would also be interested in such a Hemp tank. Thanks
I carried my old "J/ASH" Fickett tank around while I was in college, for the only reason of his excellent welds!!! Never have seen anyone better....remember him telling Steve Justice and myself, how the lights would dim in his neighborhood when he powered up his welding equipment!!! Sure wish I could pass it on to someone else now, got sick of carrying it around, and trashed it. Dumb me! Dave.
