Duty and Tax
Originally posted by Steve77tI'm very well aware of the web site and prices posted for Europe. I'm saying that that maybe the purchase price but you must ship from there to here and when it arrives here you get also a friendly note from the Feds that you WILL pay X amount in taxes also. it's that import tax and duty thing that everyone doesnot consider that makes the price at 1295.00 $ As far as using bearings. All units from Konny and König and even Rossi have a plastic cage thrust bearing in them. When I rebuild a unit I use or relace this bearing with a metal cage type but the price of this is around 50.00$ as opposed to about 20.00 for plastic. Back to the Tax thing, Any part with a bearing in it has a higher duty than one without. Bearings that sell cheap in Europe ahve a higher rate than other parts. this is due to the flooding of the bearing market many years ago from Japan so the Feds applied a higher tax to keep American manufactors competitive and such. Enough of the Civic's and Economics leson. lets all pick our heads up off our desks and pay attention to the instuctor.
I Am well aware of duties and taxes. we get nailed 15% on anything we bring in for personal uses at the border.. as for Duty we are fortunate we have no duty on anything from Estonia, CH republic and a few other places like that as they are a development country as our gov't calls them. Now obviously if the product is for resale then we do not pay the 15% on the items as they come in we pay it in our quarterly tax return (business) sales tax.
I used to import speakers and a couple lines of A/V products from Estonia both by air and sea and usually a 20' container. I had three guys working for me that I sent to a customs clearing course for three weeks. The general public get nailed all the time.. you know it;s real funny - You want to see a shipping company jump.. when the give you a big bill for import costs - just asked them who signed your power of attorney for them to clear the shipment on your behalf.. They usually change there tune rather quickly..
I usually try to clear my items coming in myself as the norm is most agents do not know what we are bringing in and will grab a number from the book wether it is duty free or not..
I can also clear gearboots under a marine transmission section which is all duty free. They were trying to charge me 10% duty on the gears but I got that all straight when I went and found the code myself and they were of course duty free.

I agree

Alot of non facts here.
I have Konny that I have run under a three holer, and I did not replace any bearings.... if it held up under the FE, I doubt very, very, very, very seriously replacement bearings are needed for a stocker, or even a real D Mod. Why spend money when it needs not be spent ? Phone call to the man who imports them and knows what the heck he is talking about, or spend hundreds on useless parts and work.... hmmmmm. I know my choice.
The only mod I mad to my Konny was pinning the shaft. Easily done with a drill press at your own shop......Dave Mason

Do u mean drilling the 5mm shear pin out to 1/4", or ..???
He's probably talking about drilling and pinning to keep the prop shaft from sliding forward through the prop shaft gear....

Originally posted by samBrian, the Konny/Konig gears are not pinned or keyed to the shaft, just a tight press fit .... that sometimes doesn't hold
Maybe Steve will tell us why
Pinning the prop shaft gear to the shaft has become a common practice to keep the shaft from sliding inside the propshaft gear. Some gears and shafts have tighter fits than others.
I have had a shaft slip after only a few laps of a new Yamato Hatchet unit, and have had other units last all season.
