The OSY World champions have all used 302's for aeons........ even the works team uses them when they appear... so these motors can't be that slow..........can they?
I'm still learning, but if as Dennis says the 302 punches quicker and reaches top end quicker, the 302 would be the motor of choice on a jetty start or with one bouy turns. With a flying clock start the 102 would already be wound up, or should be with a well timed start, when the clock hits zero and is the motor of choice with a clock and three or four bouy turns.
I've been racing the 302 in CSH for about 4-5 years and so far I've gotten the thing to run right with the top dogs for about 3/4 of the length of the strightaway. Its the last 1/4 of the strightaway where the good 102's pull me. I'm hoping my new boat and new props will cure this. I'm not giving up even if it doesn't. I like the 302's so I'm sticking with them, especially since I have 3 of them now.

I have the same issue. I have found I can go around the 102 boats in
the turns. for example I may enter the turn 5th or 6th, but with my
boat and the 302 I have been able to improve to 2nd or 3rd, but by the
end of the straightaway I have been passed again and after three laps
the 102 boats have finally pulled away and I finish 4th or 5th.
At Jesup I had some really good side by side runs with Bob Wartinger,
he with a 102 and my 302. AT the end of the race he finished approx
2 boat lengths ahead of me. Between his superb driving, and his speed,
I could not overcome the distance even with the inside lane.
Joe, John Runne has been experimenting with hull design to make
the 302 more competitive and has been successfull. The current Runne
Hydro is very competitive with the 302, but still lacks that last 1mph
needed to make up that last 1/4 straightaway.
This next comment may give me Hoof & Mouth disease but here goes......
I am confident I have two of the top 302's that can be found among all
the other 302's out there and yet I plan to get a 102 to keep testing.
I will keep testing and learning, cause I believe the 302 will get there, but
in the meantime well, lets just say in my case may the best motor win.
We all want the same thing..... to win, well now I can only point the finger
at myself, if I test and learn and which ever motor works best I have it,and
have no excuses.
