  • Yamato 302 For Sale

    Making a change,
Up for sale my 302 yamato. I have fed this horse well over the years.
Originally built by Don Jones, gear case worked by Shannon Bowman, then refreshed by R.C. Hawie, then most recently refreshed and turned into a fuel pump motor by Ed Runne.
This is a strong motor, fresh build in 2004.

I have tached this motor testing (no joke) 7300 rpms, on a new Dewald
    prop.
    Asking $2100.00 Race Ready!!!
Also have a few Dewald wheels that work with this motor on a Hydro,
asking 175.00 each. I have 3 good wheels available.

How many RPMs does a 302 usually turn? What about a 102?

      I might know this...

      Doug,
The owner's manual says the power curve for the 302 peaks at
      7200 rpms.
The 102 turns slightly harder I have never run one but I think I have
heard the 102 should turn around 7300 to 7500 rpms. I cannot
confirm those numbers for the 102 but I am confident about the
      numbers for the 302.

              FAQ's

Q; What is a pumper motor?
A; The fuel tank was removed and a fuel pump added to lower the
center of gravity in the boat.

              Q: What does refresh mean?
A; Cylinders were brush honed and new rings installed in March.

Q;Why are you selling this motor?
A; I have bought a 102, I am planning to run in CSH when it is done.

Q;What is your rock bottom price?
A; Make me an offer and I will let you know

              Q;Giving up on 302's on a Hydro?
A; No I have another one, plan to test alot. A 102 currently is dominant
in CSH, I intend to continue to develop the 302.

Just a few questions I keep getting, thought I might answer them here.
              Thanks,

Dennis, make sure you want to part with that 302, as 102's are not as dominant in CSH as they used to be. With new props from Dewald, the 302's are catching up to the 102's VERY QUICKLY. I would not be at all suprised if a 302 finishes in the top 3 at the Nat's this year! If I did not have so much $$$ ties up in my 102's, I would go the 302 route myself. PLUS, no mag problems to worry aboout with a 302!

                  I agree!

                  Daren,
I am not giving up on the 302, just improving the odds a little bit till
I get the 302 running better. The first place I am starting is to loose
30#s to get closer to weight. Already lost 5#. Looked at pics from
Jesup and compared the attitude of my boat with me in it and John
in it, now you can't tell the throttle position but I know the extra
                  weight is not helping.
I also drove John's 102 rig and my 302 rig back to back and felt the
difference between the two motors. Very interesting lesson.
I like charecteristics of both motors and for the short term I want to test
this new 102 against my 302 to get better.
Plus this 102 has never been raced, stock gearfoot, original everything.
It's kinda like finding 100.00 in your coat pocket after the summer, you
                  can't believe your good luck.

                          102 / 302

The OSY World champions have all used 302's for aeons........ even the works team uses them when they appear... so these motors can't be that slow..........can they?

                            Paul,

What do the European's do with the Yamatos once they are replaced with the newest model? This will be my fifth year racing the 302's and I'm very happy with them. They perform very well on the runabouts and are getting faster on the hydros.

                              Level playing field

                              Paul,
If everyone runs the 302 in a class then there is parity, and it then
becomes a question of Props, setup, driver, etc.
The 102 has a slight advantage for Hydros in that it will turn a few
hundred rpms more than the 302 and from my testing it continues to
"pull" all the way down the straightaway.
The 302 punches quicker and gets to its peak power much faster than
                              the 102.
I have been racing 302's for 6 years and have been testing and buying
props every year. I like the motor and I have a good one, always tests
1 to 2 mph less than a 102 on top end.
It is not a slow motor just the 102 has a little advantage at the end of the
                              straightaway.
If propwork can bring the motor up to the 102 I will still have another good motor, better than the one I have for sale, 1 mph better.
I prefer the 302, but until I find that extra difference I am forced to try the
102 to have the smoke to race with the likes of Clark, Bowman, Runne,Gonyea, and other top drivers too numerous to keep listing.
If the class was all 302's I am sure my engines would be at the top at
                              each race.
                              Just my opinion,
                              Dennis 21Z
