  • Mercury KG4 tank band/rim

    Need a tank band/rim for a Mercury KG4 outboard. With or without model/serial plate. Please e-mail me direct at jschubert@wi.rr.com hopefully with pictures & pricing.

      That looks like a KE7, not a KG4 with the rocket and the Hurricane cast in the rim.

        The KE7 is a 10 HP. Lightning and has no rockets cast on it. The KG4 has rockets, If this tank is zoomed in it has no rockets. Go to this link also. The e-bay'r is also from the same town as this link. The tanks do get decieving though because some changed in the middle of production because Karl used parts left over and parts for the next model. Some of his motors were sold new with left over parts. The guys in this link should be able to tell you what you have so the correct year parts are bought. Or what parts will fit.

          no ring....

          but, have several KG4 ID tags.........even have one in the 505 serial number range...

              Didn't Tom Molder used to make repro serial number plates.... maybe he still does?

              My World Record KG4 was, 506879.... I still have the original whole motor. tank and belly pan.

                    John, Were the "505" blocks the "Magic" blocks prefered back in the day??.....I heard the drill'n was "off" a little on the exhaust ports?......Or a fresh drill was used on that run......Or a little factory bluebrint'n at the back door of the shop??.........Should make good conversation.

                    Post if you found a band.....I have some back North in warehouse Clymer, NY. ...........But won't be back till Whitney Nationals or Lock Haven Labor Day race......It's yours if ya still need then.

                      I must have went brain dead for a minute and misread your modle number. I thought for sure it said KE4 not KG4. That is the incorrect tank band on e-bay. I will keep looking for ya though,
                      Just so ya know it is not the first time either I bought a KE4 fishin' lower unit for my KE7 "knowing" it would not fit due to the drive shaft size, so here it sits.
                      Sorry again and I'll see if I can find the "rockets".

                        Thanks for the offer, but found one.

                        Some thought the 505 block was best, but better then the block, the 505 engines had the barn door CC that many liked best. WE as well as others felt the tight CC from the Lightning with the CC to carb opening machined to allowable spec, using allen head rods (later rods wouldn't clear the back of the CC & then using the MK15/late run KG4H's 596/597 blocks with the raised cast in area from the ports to the deck were best. It all depended on what combinations the builder thought was best.

                            The best crankcase I tested was the barndoor. The bigger the crankcase volume the better, although the differences were in 1/4 mph increments. It went KE -allen rod, numbered sandcasr, KG7 diecast, Mk15/20 , barndoor. All with Mk 20 reedcages, 10 thou reeds etc.

                            My best block was 595220H. The ports were within .008 but not into the tolerence. I always thought that that block probably just stayed straighter when it got hot.

                            Radical never worked for me. Timed at .385, lots of ccs, and pretty well stock ran best.
