  • For all you vintage Bezoit hydro fans

A bit different on the power end of things but the general hull looks good.

    Note the "Gulf" deck decal.

I Believe that boat originally belonged to Clyde Higgins who raced "C" and "D"
stock out of Rhode island in the late 70"s and thru the 80"s. At the end of my D hydro days I raced the boat for a while in the mid to late 80"s when my D the 40-B needed some work.
Clyde was very fast in both C and D stock when he raced it
Looks to be in pretty good shape

Glasses, My first thought was John Grant, but I'll defer to your expertise. It's probably a 1975-76.

          Builder?

Is Bezoit different than Bezoats that he has in the add?

            Farmer,
I met John Grant arnd 1973. He was racing D hydro and runabout locally and we raced against each other till we teamed up the next year and he added C runabout and stopped doing the Hydros. I would never have done so well if it wasn't for him building the motors. His D motors won at least 6 national titles. Unfortunately John Grant passes away in Florida in 2005 from a brain tumor.

I thought Doug Cohee was 27-D??.........Besides Dick Fickett, Doug was the most anal racer i ever met!! Doug and his wife Karen could have been spokespeople for Better Homes and Garden!! All his stuff was immaculate. Doug was a airline pilot and was told to quit racing or lose his job after a series of boat racing wrecks!!

Anyway, sorry to hear about John passing, he was clearly the better half of your team!!.........

There is only one BEZOATS.........Shannon Bowman and his sidekick Craig.

It's also funny how some folks confuse Dewald with Dewalt...........one day people will wonder if there was a prop god named Dewalt.

Clyde Higgins did run 27D and did run C and D stock during the time mentioned by Glasses, in fact he's a member here, We last saw him at Standish, last spring.

Matt: Doug was 727D. We understood the same reasons why he "left" the sport! We all witnessed him blowing over in the chute at Damariscotta, Maine on Biscay Pond, both days with similar vintage full bow Bezoat. That boat ended up with Steve White from Maine.

Glasses: Was it your Bezoat that Racer floated around the Rockland Record course?

Matt, Mr Babcock is right, Doug drove the 727-D because that was the plane that he flew. Doug I believe was much famous for his flip at Dayton that ended up in the initial Speed and Spray book.
No it was me that drove the boat with a Grant "C" engine around the Rockland record course. First heat I got a bad start and my time was pretty close to the record. I started great the next heat and I was out front on the 2nd lap when a blade came off the Hopkins prop. Matt speaking of better halves, How is Bill doing

Glasses - Clyde ran DSH at Kingston, NH last September. Too bad Scott Clark does not follow HR, I am sure he could provide some colorful comments on Clyde's return.

Babcock Bros 38A - Pete, Racer did set a record at Rockland, Maine in 35SSH, Glasses second outfit.

Doug Cohee - After Cohee blew it over at Damariscotta, Maine, he did sell the boat to Steve White. White proceeded to blow it over at the first race the following year at Hanson, MA. The photo as picked up by Associated Press and appeared throughout the country.

Forgot about 35SSH. Racer did set a record in the old 40-B. I won the nationals twice in 35SSH. Once at Saranac Lake in NY and two years later at Wakefield Mich but was never fast (to heavy) enough to set a record That is why we put the lightweight "Racer" in the boat at Rockland Me

What was required for Rockland to be a record course?

                              ... Measuring the course?
...my childhood memory remembered Rockland as a very small, tight course, is that correct?
