I need to call you for a couple of 16mm prop nuts and shear pins. I used my last shear pin on my Geo Metro camshaft/timing sprocket, ... perfect fit, it fit's better than the stock Suzuki one!
They are made from (PP) Polypropylene and not much sticks to it. I would have to use Bulldog, then a primer and then the color. The paint will be thick and will chip pretty easily.
I think looking for a Red one outright might be the better way to go. If I cant find one, I will make a buck and Vacuum form one myself out of (PP) or (PE) Polyethylene, both impervious to fuel.
If I was to do any painting on a cover, I would just make it out of glass over Styrofoam and then melt the foam out with Acetone.

I have custom painted several of them over the years and will last just fine, if you use the correct paint and additives..................but definately a LOT cheaper to find an orange one.....although most were removed and thrown away..........

My Y80 front cover is fiberglass so I thought the rear was the same.

I thought they were all plastic, my bad. Are the fiberglass pieces original parts or aftermarket or possibly homemade?
I kind of like the idea of them possibly being made from fiberglass. I'd love to make a custom set, ... I think they could be spruced up a bit. Has or does anyone cut out the front and add a foam screen so the engine can get air into the carb with a cleaner flow and still be able to keep water spray out, ... Or, possibly add some reverse facing louvers on the sides of the cover, ... lot's of function and styling ideas come to mind.
Heck, ... I have tons of foam, glass, CF and Kevlar along with 6 gallons of epoxy floating around here. I think I'll have some fun with it when I get some free time here in January.

I purchased my Y80 in 1977 frolm Dick O'Dea Racing for APBA 1978 20ssh (probationary) class starting in 1978 and it was provided as it was raced in Japan with fiberglass front cover, but no rear cover and the 16mm prop shaft. There must be fiberglass covers floating around. I believe the carb gets plenty of air from the rear and top of the cover and the spray is kept out of the carb.
You can fab what you desire out of F glass.
Yamato must have switch out of the FGlass for easier to form plastics and cheaper to make than FGlass.

Yes, Glass is considerably more to make than the plastic once the initial molds are cut, also, (PP) is far more durable. Probably why they changed to plastic. I bet people were getting tired of glass shards from the edges and cracks getting into their hands.
Looking at the carb and cover, ... to me, ... it looks like there is a lot that can be done as far as getting the air in there cleaner. There's a lot of turbulence going on under that cover.
Does your glass cover look exactly like the plastic covers?

All the covers look alike to me but I never inspected them for FGlass or plastic.
