1949 NEAL 10' RUNABOUT RACEBOAT with YAMATO 302 OUTBOARD
It was for sale at $5900 and did not sell. So they raised the price and relisted. (The new marketing?) A very strange combo to me. Also the logo on the side is not the proper one. The script is from the dash plaque whereas the "E" is different for the side logo. I dont think it looks "right". My opinion.
It is interesting! Something doesn't seem quite right..... I would like to hear what R.C. Hawie would say about this boat. It has been "Ultra-Restored", which to me is over-restored. It is far better than anyone would have raced it back-in-the-day. For it to be only 10' long, it would have been built for the new class A or B stock outboard races. The normal racing runabouts of the time were the very popular C service/ C racing runabouts. However, these would be 14' boats with high sides! The deck looks like the standard 1930s Jacoby or Neal hydro deck. Look where the dashboard meets the bottom, there aren't any frames or stringers? Interesting!
I am about 99% sure that I have seen a photo of a Neal runabout somewhere. I think it may have been in an old Boat Sport magazine. Jim Johnson from Ohio would know for sure. Maybe he showed me a photo.
I can't see any details on that one that really match the construction details of the many Neal hydros that I have seen or owned.
It may be a boat that just has hardware from another Neal hull or just different from what we have seen before.
Bought a Neal hydro from my neighbor's kid several years ago. Same vintage as the boat in question. The "Neal" logo on the side of the boat is not original, looks like a weak attempt to copy the logo.
I have seen the boat several times and it looks good. It's a small boat for the Yamato but it runs good. It used to belong to one of the antique guys in MS and he has brought it to FL for the AOMCI shows. He restored it and he always said it was an original Neal. He did his own graphics and the decal on the side was his own design. He lost his house and job (business he worked for was washed away) when hurricane Katrina hit his town in MS and we haven't seen him since. I did motor work for him and the boat was fast. The boat is nice and very solid.
i too know this boat and it's restorer. have seen it run. it is fast. i saw a gps reading of 63 mph about tree years ago. the boat is a neal however he cut down the sides and built a new deck. he did a very nice job. show car finish. he bought the motor new and it's a sweet one. as a csr driver i would like to have that one but not at that price. lol
