Cooper, this is very interesting. Both of mine had the 14:19 racing gearcase but I have no idea what year the powerhead was from. One was actually a Monarch as Champion built the motors for others and they were named Monarch, Majestic or Voyager. The Monarch was green. This was my gas burner that I bought in 1953 from the wages I earned sweeping the floor of my father's print shop at 35 cents-per-hour. It came with a racing gearcase. The other one, the alcohol burner, had the gas tank spacered up higher to clear the open exhaust with no recoil starter. The tank was painted a dark blue (not champion blue). This is the one built by Irv Kurke, later I bought the "B" from his brother Ray.

          Tim,
Quite a few of the earlier 4KS and 4LS engines were updated with the racing gearcases and also a slightly shorter tower housing. I have a 4KS that was updated and was factory stamped 4KS-1X. It has the racing gearcase and short tower and the glass bowl carb of the 4LS-1X.

I have been trying to an article on the early Hot Rods for the AOMCI magazine and hopefully will get to it this winter.

Usually a lurker here, but do have a few pics of a 4LS-1X I had. It turned up at a NY AOMCI meet. It really didn't fit my collection of 30's OMC racers, but didn't want it to disappear. I later sold it to Chuck Young from Ohio.
